Resize Photos to the Instagram Post Size
Instagram feed posts are 1080 pixels wide, and the tallest shape the feed accepts is 4:5, which makes 1080 × 1350 px the size that takes up the most screen. This page crops and resizes your photos to it, so Instagram shows the frame you chose instead of trimming it for you.

How to use this tool
- 1
Add the photos for your post
Upload up to 20 images, the same number a carousel can hold. JPG, PNG, HEIC from an iPhone, WebP and AVIF all work, up to 95 MB each.
- 2
Keep 1080 × 1350 or switch to square
Width and height start at 1080 × 1350 px with Fit on Crop to fill. For a square post type 1080 in Height. Crop position on Smart keeps the main subject in the frame.
- 3
Resize and post
Press Resize, download the JPGs and pick them in the Instagram app. They arrive at exactly the size Instagram stores, so the app has nothing left to crop or scale.
Instagram post size: 1080 × 1350 px for a 4:5 portrait, 1080 × 1080 px for a square, 1080 × 566 px for landscape. Width is always 1080 px.

These dimensions come from Instagram's own limits rather than from habit. The app keeps feed images at up to 1080 pixels wide and accepts any shape between 1.91:1 and 4:5. Instagram has changed the numbers before, most visibly when the profile grid moved from squares to 3:4 tiles in January 2025, so check the help center if a post suddenly looks different.
Choose the shape before you resize, because a 4:5 crop of a landscape shot throws away a lot of the picture. Portrait 4:5 suits people, food, outfits and anything shot upright. Landscape keeps wide scenery intact but shows up as a thin strip in the feed. If you want to keep a wide photo whole in a tall frame, set Fit to Pad with color and pick a border color instead of cropping.
Reels covers and stories use the 9:16 frame, and profile pictures are a separate job handled by Instagram profile picture size. Our guide to Instagram post and story sizes lists the remaining formats in one place.
Instagram post size in inches and cm
| Size | Pixels | cm | in | DPI | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4:5 portrait | 1080 × 1350 | 9.14 × 11.43 | 3.6 × 4.5 | 300 | Same shape as an 8 × 10 in photo print. |
| 1:1 square | 1080 × 1080 | 9.14 × 9.14 | 3.6 × 3.6 | 300 | Prints cleanly as a small square; enlarge only with a higher-resolution original. |
| 1.91:1 landscape | 1080 × 566 | 9.14 × 4.79 | 3.6 × 1.89 | 300 | Fine for a banner-shaped print; little height to work with. |
| 9:16 story | 1080 × 1920 | 9.14 × 16.26 | 3.6 × 6.4 | 300 | Fits a phone-sized print or a slim poster mockup. |
- A phone screen has no inches: Instagram ignores the DPI tag, so only the pixel numbers matter for posting.
- Inches and centimeters matter when you print a post or design it in a print app; the table uses 300 DPI, the usual photo print standard.
- Designing in Canva or Photoshop? Set the canvas to 1080 × 1350 px, not 3.6 × 4.5 in, so no app rounds the pixels.
- Keep important text at least 60 px away from the left and right edges so the 3:4 grid preview does not clip it.
- Export at quality 90 or higher; Instagram recompresses everything, and a soft upload gets softer.
Instagram post dimensions: common questions
What is the best Instagram post size in 2025?
1080 × 1350 px, a 4:5 portrait. It is the tallest ratio the feed shows, so it fills more of the phone screen than a square or landscape image.
Why does Instagram crop my photo when I upload it?
The feed accepts ratios only between 1.91:1 (wide) and 4:5 (tall). A photo straight from a phone camera is usually 3:4 or 9:16, both taller than 4:5, so the app makes you trim it. Resizing to 4:5 here first lets you decide which part survives instead of the app's default center crop.
Do I need 1080 px exactly, or can I upload bigger?
You can upload bigger, but Instagram's help pages say it stores feed photos at a width of up to 1080 px and scales anything wider down. Its own downscale is lossy, so uploading exactly 1080 px wide with a quality of 90 gives you control over how sharp the result looks.
Does the new profile grid cut off my 4:5 posts?
Since early 2025 the profile grid shows thumbnails as 3:4 rectangles instead of squares. A 4:5 post loses a thin strip at the left and right in the grid only; the post itself still opens in full. Keep text and faces away from the outer edges and nothing important is hidden.
What size should every slide of a carousel be?
The first slide sets the ratio for all of them, and Instagram crops later slides to match. Resize every image in one batch with the same width and height so the shapes agree. A carousel holds up to 20 photos or videos.
Is the Instagram story size the same as a post?
No. Stories and Reels are 1080 × 1920 px, a 9:16 vertical frame. Change the height to 1920 on this page, or choose 9:16 under Resize by → Aspect ratio, if you are preparing a story.
