Applies when both sides are set or the shape changes. Fit inside keeps everything and may come out smaller on one side; crop fills the frame exactly; pad adds borders; stretch distorts.

Fit is set to Crop to fill with Crop position Center. For a wide logo you do not want cut, open Advanced settings and choose Pad with color.

512 × 512 px is a 1:1 square of 262,144 pixels, large enough for an app store and small enough to upload anywhere.
Where a 512 × 512 image is required
App platforms settled on 512 px as the size they scale everything else from. Google Play's store listing requires a 512 × 512 hi-res icon. A web app manifest that wants Chrome's install prompt lists a 512 × 512 icon next to a 192 × 192 one. Discord suggests uploading a server icon of at least 512 × 512, and several sticker makers and avatar fields accept that size directly.
Android launcher icons work in density-independent units instead: an adaptive icon is drawn on 108 × 108 dp layers, of which roughly the middle 72 dp is visible after masking. Designing the artwork at 512 px or more and exporting the smaller densities from it keeps every version crisp.
Outside app stores, 512 × 512 is the native training size of Stable Diffusion 1.x, so datasets and reference images for those models are cut to it. For the larger App Store icon, use the 1024x1024 image converter instead.

The icon looks soft on the home screen
The source was smaller than 512 px and got enlarged. Start from a larger export or the original vector file; resizing cannot invent detail.
Part of the logo is cut off in a circle
Launchers mask icons into circles. Choose Fit Pad with color so the logo shrinks into the middle, leaving the outer 10% on each side as background.
A white box appears around a transparent logo
The output was saved as JPG, which has no transparency. Keep Output format on PNG or Same as input.
A wide banner turns into a narrow crop
Crop to fill keeps the center. Switch Crop position to Left, Right or Smart, or pad instead of cropping.

512 × 512 image questions
Is 512 × 512 big enough for a PWA icon?
Yes, it is the largest size Chrome's install guidance asks for, together with a 192 × 192 version. Android also builds the splash screen of an installed web app from the large icon, so supplying a sharp 512 px PNG matters more than adding more sizes.
What makes a 512 px icon maskable?
A maskable icon fills the whole square with background and keeps the logo inside a centered circle of 80% of the width, about 410 px at 512 px. Android then cuts it to a circle, squircle or rounded square without clipping the logo. Use Pad with color here to add that margin.
What size does Google Play want for the app icon?
The hi-res icon in a Play Console store listing is 512 × 512 px, a 32-bit PNG with alpha, no larger than 1024 KB. Google Play applies the rounded mask and shadow itself, so upload a full square without your own rounded corners.
Can I prepare Stable Diffusion training images at 512 × 512?
Yes. Stable Diffusion 1.x models were trained at 512 × 512, so LoRA and embedding datasets for them are usually cropped to that size. Upload the set in batches of 20; Crop position Smart keeps faces and main subjects inside the square.
Should a 512 × 512 icon be PNG or JPG?
PNG, because icons need sharp edges and often a transparent background, and PNG keeps both. JPG suits photos, but it blurs flat colors slightly and cannot store transparency. Our JPG vs PNG guide explains the trade-off.
How big is a 512 × 512 PNG file?
A flat logo is typically tens of kilobytes, while a detailed photo saved as PNG can approach 500 KB or more. If a form caps the file size, switch Output format to JPG or WebP for photos, or use the image resizer in pixels and KB.
