Resize Image for Facebook
Facebook crops whatever you upload to fit its slots, and it rarely crops where you would. Resize the picture here to the exact shape of the slot first, so the subject stays in frame and the text stays readable.

Which size do I resize to for Facebook?
Shared post or link image 1200 × 630, cover 820 × 312 (desktop) / 640 × 360 (phone), story 1080 × 1920, profile picture 320 × 320 or larger. The tool opens on 1200 × 630.

These figures are the sizes Facebook displays today and the ones its help pages and ad specs point to. They change when Meta redesigns a layout, so if a slot looks different from what you expect, the shape of the area on screen is the thing to match, and the pixel count follows from it.
One image rarely fits two slots. A 1200 × 630 post is too wide for a story and too short for a phone cover. Resize a copy for each use instead of uploading the same file everywhere and hoping the automatic crop is kind.

Cover photo
Design for the overlap of 820 × 312 and 640 × 360: a centered band roughly 640 × 312 px shows on both. The profile picture also covers the lower left on desktop.
Profile picture
Center the face with space around it; the circle crop removes the corners, and on a Page the image is tiny in comments.
Link and post images
Keep headlines large. At 1200 × 630 in a phone feed, small type shrinks to unreadable size.
Stories
Use the middle of the 1080 × 1920 frame for faces and text; the top and bottom are covered by interface.
Facebook image quality: JPG, PNG and file size
Facebook's own advice for covers is an sRGB JPG under 100 KB for fast loading, and PNG when the image is mostly a logo or text. This page saves JPG at quality 90 by default, which keeps photos clean after Facebook's recompression. Switch Output format to PNG for banners and quote graphics, and turn on Limit file size if you want to hit a KB target as well.
Planning images for Instagram at the same time? The shapes overlap but are not identical; Instagram post size is set up for 4:5 portraits, and Instagram post and story sizes compares both platforms side by side.
Facebook image size questions
What size should a Facebook post image be?
1200 × 630 px is the long-standing size for link previews and landscape posts, a 1.91:1 shape. Square 1080 × 1080 and portrait 1080 × 1350 posts also display fully in the feed on phones. Meta adjusts its layouts from time to time, so treat these as current guidance rather than fixed rules.
Why does my Facebook cover photo look cut off on my phone?
The cover is shown at about 820 × 312 px on desktop but about 640 × 360 px on smartphones, which is a taller shape. Desktop trims the top and bottom of a mobile-friendly image, and phones trim the sides of a desktop one. Keep everything important in the center; Facebook cover photo size for mobile covers the overlap.
Why are my Facebook photos blurry after upload?
Facebook recompresses every image. Uploading at the size it displays, rather than a 6000 px original, leaves less for its compressor to throw away. Meta's help pages also suggest PNG for profile pictures and covers that contain a logo or text, since sharp edges suffer most from JPG compression.
How big should a Facebook profile picture be?
Upload a square of at least 320 × 320 px. It appears at roughly 170 × 170 on a computer and smaller on phones, inside a circle, so leave a margin around the face or logo for the round crop.
Do Facebook Stories need 1080 × 1920?
Yes, a 9:16 image at 1080 × 1920 fills the screen. Keep text away from roughly the top and bottom 250 px, where the profile name, reply bar and buttons sit.
Is a Facebook ad image the same size as a post?
For feed placements the same 1.91:1 and square shapes apply, with Meta recommending at least 1080 px wide for ads. Stories and Reels placements use 9:16. Resize one master image once per placement instead of letting Ads Manager crop it.
