Minecraft Server Icon Converter
A Java Edition server shows a picture next to its name in the multiplayer list only if it finds a PNG of exactly 64 × 64 pixels called server-icon.png. Upload your logo here and you get that file, square and ready to drop in.

How to use this tool
- 1
Upload your logo or artwork
PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or a phone screenshot all work. Square art gives the best result; up to 20 images at once, 95 MB each.
- 2
Keep 64 × 64 and Crop to fill
Width and Height are set to 64 px and Fit to Crop to fill, which trims a non-square image around the center. Change Crop position if the important part sits at an edge.
- 3
Resize and rename
Press Resize, download the PNG and rename it to server-icon.png before uploading it to the server folder.
Minecraft server icon size: why exactly 64 × 64
When a client refreshes the multiplayer list, each server answers a status ping with its name, player count, MOTD and the icon encoded inside the response. The server only accepts an image that is 64 pixels wide and 64 pixels tall. A 128 × 128 PNG or a 64 × 63 crop is skipped and the server logs an error, which leaves the grey default icon in place.
That is why a plain rename does not work: a 512 × 512 Discord avatar saved as server-icon.png is the right type but the wrong size. The converter resizes to the exact pixels and writes PNG regardless of the input format, so a JPG logo or a WebP from a website comes out usable.

Where to put server-icon.png on your server
Server on your own PC
- 01Open the folder that holds the server .jar and server.properties
- 02Copy server-icon.png into it
- 03Stop and start the server
Hosting panel
- 01Stop the server in the panel
- 02Open the File Manager at the top level, not inside world
- 03Upload server-icon.png, then start the server
Linux VPS
- 01Upload the file to the server directory with SFTP
- 02Check the name is all lowercase; Linux is case-sensitive
- 03Restart the server process
On Windows, File Explorer hides extensions by default, so renaming the download to server-icon.png can silently produce server-icon.png.png. Turn on File name extensions in the View menu before renaming. The same rule about exact dimensions applies to any other square asset; the resize image tool handles other sizes, and PNG to ICO makes a Windows icon from the same artwork.
Keep the design bold: two colors and a single shape read well at 64 pixels against the list's dark background. Thin outlines and small lettering disappear. The guide to cropping an image to a ratio shows how to frame the subject before you shrink it.
Minecraft server icon questions
Why does my server still show the default pack icon?
Check four things: the file is exactly 64 × 64 pixels, it is a real PNG, it is named server-icon.png in lowercase, and it sits in the same folder as server.properties. Then restart the server, because the icon is read at startup, and refresh the multiplayer list.
Can a Minecraft server icon have a transparent background?
Yes. The server list draws PNG transparency, so a logo with a cut-out background floats on the dark list instead of sitting in a box. Upload a PNG that already has transparency and the converter keeps it; a JPG has no transparency to keep.
Do Bedrock servers use server-icon.png?
No. The icon is a Java Edition feature, supported by vanilla, Spigot, Paper and other Java server software. Bedrock Dedicated Server and Realms do not read a custom server icon.
My logo is wide. How do I fit it without cutting off the text?
At 64 pixels, long text is unreadable anyway, so a symbol or a single letter works better. If you want the whole wide logo, choose Pad with color under Fit; the borders are a solid color you pick, or make the canvas square with transparent space in an editor first and then resize here.
Can the server icon be animated?
Vanilla Minecraft reads one static PNG. Some server plugins swap between several icons on each ping to fake animation, but each of those files still has to be a 64 × 64 PNG, which you can make here in one batch.
Does a 64 × 64 icon look blurry in the list?
It stays sharp if the source was sharp, because the game only scales it by your GUI scale. Pixel-art logos look crisper when the original is drawn at 16, 32 or 64 pixels, since those sizes scale to 64 without in-between pixels.
