Change the Aspect Ratio of an Image
An aspect ratio is the shape of a picture, width against height, and most upload problems are shape problems rather than size problems. Pick the ratio a platform or a print wants, choose whether to crop or pad, and the photo comes out in that shape at the highest resolution the original allows.
Resize Image

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Applies when both sides are set or the shape changes. Fit inside keeps everything and may come out smaller on one side; crop fills the frame exactly; pad adds borders; stretch distorts.
Which part of the image is kept when cropping. Smart keeps the busiest area, usually a face or the main subject.
Color of the borders added around the image, e.g. #FFFFFF for white.
Pixels per inch used to turn cm, mm or inches into pixels and written into the file. 300 is standard for print, 200 for most online forms.
Same as input keeps the original format. Pick GIF or WebP to keep an animation, PNG for transparency.
Applies to JPG, WebP and AVIF. 85 looks identical to the original for photos.
Quality is lowered until the resized file is at or just under this size.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload one photo or a batch
Add up to 20 images in JPG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, AVIF or GIF, up to 95 MB each. Portrait and landscape shots can be mixed; each one is reshaped to the same ratio.
- 2
Pick the new shape
Resize by is already on Aspect ratio with 16:9 selected. Open Aspect ratio and choose 1:1, 4:5, 3:4, 2:3, 9:16, 4:3, 3:2 or 21:9 if you need a different shape.

Crop or pad, then resize
Fit starts on Crop to fill with Crop position on Smart. Switch to Pad with color to keep the whole picture, press Resize and download.
Which aspect ratio should I pick?
1:1 for profile pictures and marketplace listings, 4:5 for Instagram feed posts, 9:16 for Stories, Reels and TikTok, 16:9 for YouTube, slides and desktop wallpaper, 3:2 for photo prints.
Common aspect ratios and where each one is used
1080 × 1080 px
1:1 square
Avatars, product photos, album art
1080 × 1350 px
4:5 portraitTallest Instagram feed post
1800 × 1200 px
3:2 landscape
35 mm film frame, 6 × 4 in prints
1920 × 1080 px
16:9 widescreen
YouTube, TVs, slides, laptops
1080 × 1920 px
9:16 vertical
Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts
2520 × 1080 px
21:9 ultrawide
Ultrawide wallpapers and cinematic banners
The ratios in this list did not appear at random. 3:2 comes from the 36 × 24 mm frame of 35 mm film, which is why many DSLR and mirrorless cameras still shoot that shape and why a standard 6 × 4 inch print needs no trimming. 4:3 was the shape of TV and computer screens for decades and lives on in phone cameras. 16:9 became the widescreen standard with HDTV and is now the default for YouTube, presentation software and most laptop screens.
Social apps added the newer shapes. Instagram started with squares, later allowed portrait posts up to 4:5, and full-screen vertical video turned 9:16 into the frame for Stories, Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts. A photo in the wrong ratio is not rejected; the app crops it, often through a face or a line of text, so reshaping it yourself means you choose what is lost.
Use this page when only the shape matters. If you also need a fixed pixel count, such as 1080 × 1350 for a feed post, a size page sets both at once. For a hand-placed crop instead of an automatic one, the crop image tool lets you drag the frame over the exact area.
Image ratio changer: crop, pad or stretch
Crop to fill
The image is trimmed on the long side until it has the new shape.
- No borders, edge to edge
- Smart position keeps the subject
- Loses a strip of the original
Pad with color
The whole image stays and bars fill the gap on two sides.
- Nothing is cut off
- Pick any pad color
- Bars show on screen
Stretch to exact size
Width and height are scaled independently to the new shape.
- No borders, no cropping
- Faces and circles distort
- Fine only for textures
Photo ratio tip for batches
TipMixing portrait and landscape shots in one batch? Keep Crop position on Smart rather than Center, so a tall photo turned into 16:9 keeps the face and not the middle of a shirt.
Aspect ratio questions
What does a 16:9 aspect ratio actually mean?
For every 16 units of width there are 9 units of height, whatever the pixel count. 1920 × 1080, 1280 × 720 and 3840 × 2160 are all 16:9, which is why a photo can be the right shape and still the wrong size for a given slot.
How do I change a photo's ratio without cutting anything off?
Set Fit to Pad with color. The full image is kept and bars in your Pad color fill the leftover space. White or a color sampled from the photo looks most deliberate.
Which ratio does a phone camera shoot by default?
Most phones save stills as 4:3; an iPhone's 12-megapixel photo, for example, is 4032 × 3024 px. That is why a phone shot has to lose a strip to become 16:9 or 1:1, and why it fits a 3:4 or 4:3 slot with no change at all.
Will changing the aspect ratio make my image blurry?
Not by itself. In this mode the tool keeps the original pixels it can and only trims or extends one side, so nothing is scaled up. Blur comes from enlarging afterwards; if a platform needs a fixed pixel size, resize to it from the full original with resize image to 1920×1080 or a similar size page.
Can I convert a vertical video frame or screenshot to 16:9?
A still screenshot, yes: choose 16:9 and Pad with color to keep the full height, or Crop to fill to keep only a band across the middle.
Is 21:9 a real ratio or a rounded one?
Rounded. Monitors sold as 21:9 are usually 2560 × 1080 or 3440 × 1440, which work out to about 2.37:1 and 2.39:1. Choosing 21:9 here gives a true 21:9 frame, close enough for wallpaper and banner use.
