Resize a GIF for a Discord PFP

An animated Discord avatar is a GIF squeezed into a small circle, and most GIFs found online are the wrong shape and far too heavy for it. This page crops the animation to a 256 × 256 px square and resizes every frame, so it loops smoothly in the circle and uploads without hitting the size cap.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the animated GIF

Add a GIF up to 95 MB, or an animated WebP. A clip where the subject stays near the middle works best, because the crop position is the same for every frame.

  2. 2

    Keep 256 × 256 and Keep animation

Width and Height are 256 px, Output format is GIF and Keep animation is ticked. Crop position is on Center; choose Top if the face sits high in the frame.

  3. 3

Resize and set it in Discord

Press Resize, then in Discord open User Settings → Profiles → Change Avatar and pick the file. The preview shows the circle before you save.

Discord PFP GIF: a square animated GIF, 256 × 256 px works well, minimum 128 × 128 px, under 10 MB. Animated avatars need Discord Nitro.

Resizing an animated GIF is different from resizing a photo. A GIF is a stack of frames, often dozens or hundreds, and each one has to be cropped and scaled the same way or the loop jumps. With Keep animation ticked, the tool applies one crop to every frame and keeps the original timing, so a three-second loop stays a three-second loop. Untick it and you get only the first frame, which is what a non-Nitro avatar would show anyway.

The crop position is fixed for the whole clip, which is why this page uses Center rather than Smart: a subject-finding crop chosen on the first frame might cut off a head that moves later. Pick a GIF where the action happens in the middle, or choose Top, Bottom, Left or Right to shift the window.

Pixel count is only part of a GIF's weight. A 256 px square with 150 frames can still be several megabytes, because every frame stores its own colors. If the file is too heavy after resizing, shorten the loop before anything else. For still avatars, Discord PFP makes a 512 px PNG instead.

Checklist for an animated PFP that loops cleanly

  • The subject stays inside the middle of the square in every frame, not just the first.
  • The loop is a few seconds long; longer clips add weight without adding much at avatar size.
  • The first frame looks good on its own, since some lists show a still image.
  • Text, if any, is large enough to read in a circle about 40 px across next to a chat message.
  • The file is under 10 MB; check the size in your file manager before uploading.

A quick fix for off-center GIFs

TipIf the subject drifts toward one side during the loop, set Fit to Pad with color and pick your Discord theme's background color. The whole frame then fits inside the square and nothing moves out of the circle.

Animated Discord avatar questions

What size should a Discord PFP GIF be?

Square, at least 128 × 128 px, and under Discord's 10 MB avatar cap. 256 × 256 px is a sensible middle: sharp on high-density screens, where the avatar is drawn with twice the pixels, yet small enough that a few seconds of animation stays light.

Do I need Nitro to use an animated avatar?

Yes. Animated profile pictures are a Discord Nitro perk. Without it Discord will not keep the animation on your avatar, so resizing the GIF only pays off once you have a subscription that includes animated avatars.

Why does my GIF avatar stop animating in some places?

Discord plays animated avatars in places such as your profile and when you hover over them, but in long member lists and some menus it can show a still frame to save resources. It is a display choice, not a problem with the file.

Can I make a Discord PFP GIF from a video clip?

Yes, in two steps. Turn the clip into a GIF first with MP4 to GIF, keeping it to a few seconds, then upload that GIF here to crop it to a square and keep every frame.

The resized GIF is still large. What else can I cut?

Frame count and colors matter more than pixels at this size. Trim the clip, drop the frame rate or reduce the palette with compress GIF for Discord. Long, full-color clips are the usual reason a small avatar weighs several megabytes.

Does the same GIF work as an animated server icon?

The shape is the same, a square shown as a circle, but animated server icons are unlocked by Server Boosts, starting at Boost Level 1, not by your own Nitro. A 256 px square GIF from this page fits both slots.
