Facebook Cover Photo Size for Mobile

Most people see your Facebook cover on a phone, where it is a 16:9 rectangle, while the desktop page shows a much flatter strip of the same file. This page resizes your image to 1640 × 924 px, a shape that fills the phone view completely and loses only a top and bottom band on a computer.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the cover image

Add a landscape JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC. A photo with the subject in the middle and some sky or floor above and below leaves the most room for both crops.

  2. 2

    Keep 1640 × 924 px

Width 1640 and Height 924 px are set with Fit on Crop to fill and Crop position on Center. For a cover that is mostly text or a logo, switch Output format to PNG.

  3. 3

    Resize and replace your cover

Press Resize and download. In Facebook tap the camera icon on your cover, choose Upload photo, and drag it only if the preview shows something off.

The phone view decides how a Facebook cover should be built: design it in 16:9, let the desktop page trim a band from top and bottom, and keep everything that matters in the middle.

The numbers come from how Facebook draws the cover. On a computer, the cover spans the top of the profile or Page at 820 × 312 px. On a phone, it is shown at 640 × 360 px, a taller shape. A file built for one is cut in the other: a flat desktop banner loses its left and right ends on a phone, and a 16:9 image loses a top and bottom band on desktop. Facebook has changed these layouts several times, so treat the figures as current guidance rather than a fixed standard.

Starting from 16:9 is the safer bet for most covers. The phone view shows everything, and the desktop crop removes about 150 px above and below the safe band in a 1640 × 924 file. Put faces, products and text in that middle band and keep the outer strips for background. Your round profile picture also overlaps the lower part of the cover, toward the left on most layouts, so leave that corner quiet.

Facebook mobile cover in short

Remember

  • Phones show the cover at 640 × 360 px, a 16:9 shape
  • Desktop shows 820 × 312 px and trims a 16:9 file top and bottom
  • 1640 × 924 px keeps 16:9 with enough pixels for sharp screens
  • Keep text inside the central 1640 × 624 px band
  • Use PNG for covers that are mostly text or a logo
  • Facebook changes layouts; recheck after a redesign

Facebook cover photo questions

What is the Facebook cover photo size on mobile?

Facebook's help center has listed the cover as 640 × 360 px on smartphones, a 16:9 shape, and 820 × 312 px on computers. Because the two shapes differ, one file is always cropped in one of the views; choosing 16:9 means phones, where most visits happen, show it whole.

Why 1640 × 924 and not 640 × 360?

640 × 360 is the size the cover is drawn at, but modern phones have two or three device pixels per point, so a 640 px file looks soft. 1640 × 924 keeps the same 16:9 shape with enough pixels for sharp high-density screens and twice the 820 px desktop width.

What part of a 1640 × 924 cover shows on desktop?

The central band, about 1640 × 624 px. Desktop scales the image to 820 px wide and keeps 312 px of height, so roughly 150 px at the top and 150 px at the bottom of your file are hidden on a computer.

What is the minimum size Facebook accepts for a cover?

Facebook's guidance has said a cover must be at least 400 × 150 px. That is a floor for uploading, not a target; at that size the cover looks blurry on every screen.

Is a Facebook cover the same as an X or LinkedIn header?

No. X uses a 3:1 strip of 1500 × 500 px and LinkedIn a 4:1 strip of 1584 × 396 px, both far flatter than a phone cover. Resize a separate copy for each, for example with Twitter header size.

How small should the file be?

Facebook has recommended an sRGB JPG under 100 KB for the fastest loading at 851 × 315 px. At 1640 × 924 that is tight; quality 90 gives a few hundred KB, which loads fine. Tick Limit file size if you want to aim lower.
