Why a Pages file will not open on Windows
Apple released Pages in January 2005 as part of iWork '05, and it has always saved to a format of its own. With Pages 5 in 2013, Apple rebuilt the app and switched to a new internal format, which is why even old converters that handled Pages '09 files often fail on current ones. Microsoft never added support for either version, so Word on Windows and Word on the Mac both decline the file.
The problem usually lands on the receiving end: a student writes an essay on an iPad but the school portal only accepts Word, or a freelancer's draft goes to a client whose legal team reviews everything in Word. When the sender cannot re-export it, converting the file yourself is the fastest way through. The document converter covers the other office formats the same way.

Body text, headings, bulleted lists, tables and inline pictures come through cleanly because Word has a direct equivalent for each. Expect to look twice at page-layout documents such as flyers and posters, where Pages places text boxes and shapes freely on the page: Word anchors them to paragraphs, so a box can move slightly.
If the goal is a file nobody will edit, a PDF is often the better choice, and if the other side uses LibreOffice, ODT is just as easy to pick under Convert to. For an older Word install that cannot open DOCX at all, convert the result again with DOCX to DOC.
Pages and DOCX format facts
PAGES
Apple Pages document
PAGES is the document format of Apple Pages, the word processor included with macOS, iPadOS and iOS since 2005. It stores text, layout, images and page design in a package that only Apple's apps fully understand. Pages can export to DOCX and PDF, but Windows, Android and Microsoft Word cannot open .pages files directly. Some upload forms and email recipients therefore cannot use them.

DOCX
Microsoft Word document
DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

Pages files go to Word when a document crosses from an Apple user to everyone else: a classmate on Windows, an employer's HR system, or an editor whose workflow runs on Word's track changes.
Pages to Word questions
Why does Windows show my .pages file as an unknown type?
Pages is an Apple app that runs only on macOS, iPadOS and iOS, and its file format is not published. Windows has no program registered for the extension, so it cannot preview or open it. Converting to DOCX gives you a file that Windows and Word recognize.
Can I just rename the file from .pages to .docx?
No. A .pages file is a package of Apple's own data files, while DOCX is an Office Open XML package with a completely different structure. Word will report the renamed file as corrupt.
Which fonts change when a Pages document opens in Word?
Fonts that ship with macOS but not with Windows, such as Helvetica Neue or Avenir Next, are replaced by a font Word does have, often Calibri or Arial. Line breaks and page counts can shift slightly as a result, so check headings and tables before sending the file on.
Do I need a Mac or the Pages app to convert?
No. The conversion runs on our server, so it works from a Windows laptop, a Chromebook or an Android phone with nothing to install. On a Mac, Pages can also export to Word itself, one file at a time.
Will comments from the Mac user come along?
Only if you turn on Include comments under Advanced settings. It is off by default, so you get a clean copy without the review notes someone may not have meant to share.
What if the Word file needs to go back to the Mac user?
Send the DOCX as it is. Pages opens Word documents directly with File, Open, so there is no need to convert back. If the recipient wants a fixed layout instead, Pages to PDF keeps every page exactly as it looked on the Mac.
