Word to JPG, slides to PNG: when a picture beats a document
A document file needs the right app to open; an image needs nothing. Instagram, X and Facebook posts take only images and video, messaging apps show a JPG inline but a DOCX as a download icon, and many marketplaces, school forms and support tickets accept a screenshot but not an Office file. Turning a page into a picture is often the fastest way to get it seen exactly as you laid it out.
Images also freeze the layout. A flyer made in Word, a menu in Pages or a chart in Excel can look different on someone else's computer because of fonts and versions; as a JPG or PNG it cannot change. The trade-off is that the text inside is no longer text: nobody can copy it, screen readers cannot read it and search engines see only pixels. For anything people need to read closely or print, convert to PDF keeps the layout and the text.
Slides are the most common source after Word. Each slide becomes one image at its own aspect ratio, ready for a LinkedIn carousel or a thumbnail; PPTX to JPG is set up for exactly that. Web pages are the other big group: HTML to JPG renders a saved page in a browser engine and captures it like a screenshot, including content below the fold.
Resolution: how DPI turns into pixel dimensions
| Size | Pixels | cm | in | DPI | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 595 × 842 | 21 × 29.7 | 8.27 × 11.69 | 72 | Thumbnails and link previews |
| A4 | 1240 × 1754 | 21 × 29.7 | 8.27 × 11.69 | 150 | Default; sharp on phones and laptops |
| A4 | 2480 × 3508 | 21 × 29.7 | 8.27 × 11.69 | 300 | Printing and zooming into small text |
| Letter | 2550 × 3300 | 21.59 × 27.94 | 8.5 × 11 | 300 | US paper at print resolution |
| Letter | 5100 × 6600 | 21.59 × 27.94 | 8.5 × 11 | 600 | Archive scans; very large files |
JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF for document pages
JPG
Lossy, universally supported, small for pages with photos.
- Quality 85 keeps small print sharp
- No transparency
- Opens on every device and site
PNG
Lossless, so letters and lines stay perfectly sharp.
- Optional transparent background
- Large for photo-heavy pages
- Ideal for slides and diagrams
WebP or GIF
WebP, released by Google in 2010, is smaller than JPG for websites. GIF turns all pages into one animated slideshow.
- WebP supports transparency
- GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame
- GIF suits short decks, not long reports
Settings to check before converting a document to an image
- Images: One per page for decks and multi-page documents; One long image for web pages and long receipts.
- Pages: All pages, First page for a cover thumbnail, or a Page range such as 1-3, 5, 8-10.
- HTML page width: 1280 px for a desktop layout, 390 px for a phone layout, anywhere from 320 to 3840 px.
- Quality: 85 by default for JPG and WebP; going below 60 blurs small type.
- Transparent background: only for PNG, WebP and GIF, when the page will sit on top of other artwork.
- Download as one ZIP: on by default so a 30-page document arrives as one download instead of thirty.
Common problems with document images
Small text is fuzzy when zoomed
The page was rendered at 72 or 150 DPI. Convert again at 300 DPI, or switch to PNG so letters are not softened by JPG compression.
A spreadsheet image cuts off columns
The sheet's print area or page setup limits what is drawn. Set the print area in Excel to the range you want, or use Excel to PNG, which is tuned for sheets.
The web page shows a cookie banner or missing images
Saved HTML files point to images and scripts on the original site. Save the page as a single .mhtml file so the assets travel with it.
Fonts look different from Word
Fonts that are not embedded are replaced with similar ones. Embed fonts when saving the DOCX, or convert to PDF in Word first and then turn the PDF into images with PDF to image.
Document to image questions
How do I turn a Word document into a JPG?
Upload the .docx or .doc file, leave Convert to on JPG and press Convert to JPG. Every page becomes a separate JPG at 150 DPI, which is about 1240 × 1754 px for an A4 page, and the set downloads as one ZIP.
Is a DOCX to JPEG conversion different from DOCX to JPG?
No. JPG and JPEG are the same format; the three-letter extension dates from older Windows versions that limited extensions to three characters. Any app that opens one opens the other.
Which resolution makes text readable on a phone?
150 DPI is enough for a page viewed on a phone or laptop screen. Choose 300 DPI if people will zoom into small print or if the image will be printed, and 72 DPI only for thumbnails and previews.
Can I get just the first page as a preview image?
Yes. Open Advanced settings and set Pages to First page. That gives one image per document, the usual way to make a cover thumbnail for a report, a deck or an e-book listing.
How do I capture a whole web page in one picture?
Upload the saved .html or .mhtml file and set Images to One long image. The page is rendered at HTML page width, 1280 px by default, and stacked top to bottom like a full-page screenshot. Set the width to 390 px to see the mobile layout.
Why is my PNG so much larger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless and stores every pixel exactly, which suits text and slides with flat colors but grows quickly with photos. For pages full of pictures, JPG at Quality 85 or WebP is usually a fraction of the size with no visible difference.
Can the image have a transparent background?
With PNG, WebP or GIF output, turn on Transparent background and the white page background is left empty. It is useful for slides or HTML elements you want to place over other artwork. JPG has no transparency, so the option is hidden for it.
