Pages to DOCX Converter
Upload systems, editors and clients often ask for a .docx specifically, and a .pages file never qualifies. This converter rewrites the Pages document as a genuine Office Open XML package, the same structure Word itself saves.

Pages and DOCX are both ZIP packages, with different insides
Both formats are compressed folders that pretend to be single files. The difference is what lives inside. Office Open XML, standardized as ECMA-376 in 2006 and ISO/IEC 29500 in 2008, stores the text as readable XML whose structure is published down to the last element. Any program can implement it, which is why Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and even Pages itself write DOCX.
Pages, since version 5 in 2013, stores the document in .iwa files: Apple's compressed binary archives with no public specification. Only Apple software reads them completely, so a converter has to decode the package and rebuild every paragraph, table and image as Office Open XML. That rebuild is what this page does.
| Part | .pages package | .docx package |
|---|---|---|
| Main text | Index/Document.iwa (binary) | word/document.xml (XML) |
| Styles | Inside the .iwa archives | word/styles.xml |
| Images | Data/ folder | word/media/ folder |
| Thumbnail | preview.jpg | docProps/thumbnail (optional) |
| Published specification | None | ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500 |
PAGES
Apple Pages document
PAGES is the document format of Apple Pages, the word processor included with macOS, iPadOS and iOS since 2005. It stores text, layout, images and page design in a package that only Apple's apps fully understand. Pages can export to DOCX and PDF, but Windows, Android and Microsoft Word cannot open .pages files directly. Some upload forms and email recipients therefore cannot use them.

DOCX
Microsoft Word document
DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

DOCX is the format submission systems, editors and clients name explicitly, so a document written in Pages has to become real Office Open XML before it can be uploaded, tracked in Word or merged into an Office template.
When a portal or editor insists on .docx
Learning platforms used by schools, manuscript submission systems and recruitment portals frequently list .doc and .docx as the only editable formats they accept. Some go further and inspect the file, rejecting anything whose internal structure is not Office Open XML. Editors who review in Word need the same thing, because tracked changes and comment threads only round-trip cleanly in a real DOCX.
If the destination accepts PDF as well, ask yourself whether anyone will edit the document. For a mixed folder of LibreOffice and Apple files, ODT to DOCX uses the same converter settings, and the document converter lists every other target.
What carries over from Pages to DOCX, and what needs a check
Arrives intact
- Headings, paragraph styles and lists
- Tables, including merged cells
- Inline images and charts as pictures
- Comments, with Include comments on
- Footnotes and endnotes
Check after converting
- Apple fonts missing on Windows, which Word substitutes
- Text boxes placed freely in page-layout documents
- Charts, which no longer link to their data table
- Page breaks that move when the substitute font is wider
Pages to DOCX questions
Is a .docx file really a ZIP archive?
Yes. Rename a copy to .zip and you will see folders such as word/ and _rels/ plus a file called [Content_Types].xml. A .pages file is a ZIP too, but its text sits in Apple's binary .iwa archives instead of XML.
Will an upload form that only takes .docx accept the converted file?
Yes. The result has the .docx extension, the Word MIME type and the Office Open XML parts that stricter portals inspect. A renamed .pages file fails exactly those checks.
Pages offered me .doc or .docx when exporting. Which one is right?
Pick .docx. The .doc option exists for Word 97–2003, and a few features, such as modern equation formatting, are flattened in that older binary format. Choose DOC to DOCX if you already have a .doc you need to modernize.
Are footnotes, page numbers and the table of contents converted?
Footnotes and endnotes become Word notes, and page numbers become page fields that update in Word. A table of contents arrives as text with page numbers; right-click it in Word and choose Update Field if the numbering shifted.
Should I send DOCX or PDF to someone who only needs to read it?
Send PDF when nobody will edit the document, since it keeps Apple fonts and spacing exactly. Use Pages to PDF for that, and DOCX only for files that will be edited further.
Can I convert an entire folder of old Pages documents?
Twenty files go into one batch, and you can run as many batches as you like with no account. Download each batch as a ZIP so the converted names stay matched to the originals.
