TXT to Word Converter

A text file holds words and line breaks and nothing else. Converting it to a Word document gives those words a page, a font and paragraph styles you can format, comment on and send to people who expect a .docx.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

  2. 2

Press Convert to DOCX, open the file and apply Heading 1 and Heading 2 from the Styles gallery to build a navigable document.

Upload the .txt file, press Convert to DOCX, and the words open in Word as editable paragraphs in the Normal style, ready for headings, page numbers and comments.

TXT to Word: who starts in plain text

More writing starts as plain text than people think. Speech-to-text and transcription tools export .txt, distraction-free editors save it, server logs and chat exports arrive as it, and a lot of novelists draft in it because nothing can corrupt a file that has no structure. The trouble begins at handoff: editors want to track changes, clients want a letterhead, and a submission form asks for .doc or .docx.

Encoding used to be the usual trap. Windows Notepad saved in the ANSI code page by default until the Windows 10 May 2019 Update made UTF-8 the default, so older files can mix encodings. The converter reads the bytes, detects the encoding, and writes the text into the DOCX as Unicode, where it no longer depends on the code page of the computer that opens it.

Need the result as a fixed page rather than an editable file? TXT to PDF sets paper size and margins instead.

Line breaks versus paragraphs in a text file

Hard-wrapped textfixed-width lines · line-wrapped text
Plain text with a line break typed at the end of every line, usually around 70 to 80 characters, instead of only between paragraphs. Email clients, old terminals and Project Gutenberg's plain-text ebooks use it. Word treats each of those breaks as a paragraph end, so a hard-wrapped file needs its lines joined to flow properly on a page.

TXT

Plain text

A TXT file contains only plain characters with no formatting, fonts, images or layout. Modern text files are usually encoded in UTF-8, which covers every language, though older files may use other encodings and show garbled characters. Plain text is tiny, never becomes obsolete and opens on every device, from phones to servers. It cannot hold bold text, tables or pictures, so structure must be expressed with spacing or simple markup.

DOCX

Microsoft Word document

DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

Plain text gets turned into DOCX when raw words have to become a document: a draft for an editor, a transcript for a client, or notes that need headings, page numbers and tracked changes.

Getting a clean .txt out of your editor first

Use File > Save as and check the Encoding box at the bottom of the dialog. UTF-8 is the safe choice.

  • Turn off Word Wrap before saving if you want to see real line breaks
  • Notepad on Windows 11 can also save UTF-8 with BOM

TXT to DOCX questions

Why does every line of my text file become its own paragraph in Word?

The file was hard-wrapped, with a line break at the end of each line rather than only between paragraphs. Join the lines inside each paragraph in a text editor first, leaving one blank line between paragraphs, then convert.

Which TXT to Word converter settings matter for a novel manuscript?

None beyond the default. After converting, set the Normal style to the font and line spacing the publisher asks for, often 12 pt with double spacing, and every paragraph updates at once.

Will Chinese, Arabic or emoji characters survive?

Yes, provided the source file is Unicode, which modern editors save by default. Text saved in an old code page such as Shift_JIS or EUC-KR is decoded as well, so accented and Asian characters land in the DOCX correctly.

Can I open a .txt file in Word without converting it?

You can. Word opens text files and asks for the encoding in a File Conversion dialog, then you save as .docx. Converting here does the same for twenty files at once and on devices without Word.

How do I turn the Word file back into plain text later?

Use DOCX to TXT. Styles, images and comments are dropped and only the words return, so keep the .docx if you will need the formatting again.

My text uses Markdown symbols like # and **. Will they become headings?

A .txt is treated as plain text, so the symbols stay as typed characters. Rename the file to .md and upload it again: the converter then reads it as Markdown and turns # lines into real headings.
