Excel to HTML Converter

A price list, timetable or results sheet kept in Excel is easy to update and hard to publish. Converting it to HTML gives you a real table your website, CMS or intranet can display, search engines can read and phones can scroll.

Answer

How do I convert an Excel sheet to an HTML table?

Upload the workbook, keep Formatting on Simple and press Convert to HTML. Each sheet becomes a clean UTF-8 HTML table with a header row, ready to paste into a website or CMS.

Excel to HTML: putting a spreadsheet on a web page

Sharing an .xlsx as a download asks every visitor to own a spreadsheet app and to open a file just to read a few rows. On a phone that often fails outright. An HTML table, by contrast, loads with the page, works with screen readers, can be styled by the site's CSS and is indexed by search engines like the rest of the text.

People who need this conversion tend to keep the source in Excel because it is easy to edit: a club's fixture list, a shop's price sheet, a school's exam timetable, a lab's reference values. The workflow is to update the workbook, convert, paste the table, repeat. If the destination is a printed report instead, Excel to Word produces a table inside a document.

Which Formatting setting gives which HTML

Formatting choices for Excel to HTML
SettingWhat the HTML containsBest for
Keep allTable with fills, fonts, borders and alignment written as inline stylesStandalone pages and email where no stylesheet applies
SimpleTable, header row, merged cells and text only; your site's CSS does the stylingCMS pages, blogs and intranets
Text onlyCell contents as text without table markupFeeding the words into another tool

Making a wide Excel table work on phones

CSS for a table that scrolls sideways on small screens
.table-scroll { overflow-x: auto; }
.table-scroll table { border-collapse: collapse; min-width: 600px; }
.table-scroll th, .table-scroll td { padding: 6px 10px; border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd; }

Wrap the converted table in a div with the class above and the page keeps its width while the table scrolls inside its own box. That beats shrinking text until it is unreadable. Freeze-pane headers from Excel do not exist in HTML, so keep the first row short and clear.

What the HTML keeps from the workbook

  1. Values as displayed

    Formula results, dates and currency are written as text, so the page shows what the sheet shows.

  2. Structure

    The first row becomes the header and merged cells are kept as spanning cells; one table is written per sheet.

  3. Images and charts

    With Include images on, pictures placed on the sheet come along; turn it off for a text-only table.

Excel and HTML format facts

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language

HTML is the markup language of the web, first described by Tim Berners-Lee in the early 1990s and now maintained by WHATWG as a living standard. An HTML file describes headings, paragraphs, links, tables, images and forms, while styling usually comes from CSS. Every browser renders it, and it is also used for email templates and saved web pages. A single HTML file often depends on external images and stylesheets, so it may look broken when moved on its own.

Excel workbooks are turned into HTML when a table maintained in a spreadsheet has to be published: a price list, schedule or results sheet that should appear as a readable, searchable table on a website rather than as a download.

Excel to HTML questions

Why not use Excel's own Save as Web Page?

Excel can save a workbook as a web page, but a multi-sheet file comes out as a main .htm plus a folder of supporting files such as sheet001.htm and filelist.xml, and the markup is full of Office-specific styles. It is built for opening back in Excel, not for pasting into a CMS. The Simple output here is a plain table you can drop into a page.

Do formulas still calculate in the HTML table?

No. HTML has no formula engine, so each cell holds the value the formula produced when the workbook was last saved. Recalculate and save in Excel before converting, and re-convert whenever the numbers change.

How do I put the table into a WordPress page?

Open the HTML file in a text editor, copy everything from the opening table tag to the closing one, and paste it into a Custom HTML block in the WordPress editor. Add the scrolling wrapper shown on this page if the table is wider than the content column.

How big a sheet is sensible for one web page?

Excel allows 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns, but a browser page with tens of thousands of rows becomes slow to load and impossible to read. Split very large data into several sheets or pages, or publish a CSV download alongside a short summary table.

Should a README or wiki get HTML or Markdown?

GitHub, GitLab and most wikis render Markdown tables natively and keep them readable in the source, so Excel to Markdown is the better fit there. Choose HTML for websites, CMS pages and anything that needs merged cells, which Markdown tables cannot express.
