ODP to PPTX Converter

Decks built in LibreOffice Impress or OpenOffice save as .odp, an open ISO standard that PowerPoint reads only partly. Converting to PPTX hands Office users a file that behaves like one of their own.

Who sends ODP files and who receives them

OpenDocument is the default format of LibreOffice, which many schools, universities and public bodies install instead of Microsoft Office. The UK government adopted ODF in 2014 as its standard for sharing editable documents, and several European administrations made similar choices. Lecturers, civil servants and Linux users therefore produce .odp files as a matter of course.

The people on the other end mostly use PowerPoint. A conference wants slides as PPTX, a company's brand template lives in Office, a teacher's school laptop runs Microsoft 365. PowerPoint can open an .odp, but it does so as a foreign file, and features it cannot map are dropped or simplified. A real PPTX removes that step for everyone who opens the deck after you.

What an ODP file actually is

ODPOpenDocument Presentation · Impress presentation
The presentation member of the OpenDocument Format family: a ZIP package holding XML files for content, styles and settings, plus a Pictures folder. OASIS approved ODF 1.0 in 2005 and it became ISO/IEC 26300 in 2006; versions 1.2 (2011) and 1.3 (2021) followed. PPTX is the matching part of Microsoft's rival standard, ISO/IEC 29500.

ODP

OpenDocument Presentation

ODP is the presentation format of the OpenDocument standard from OASIS, introduced in 2005. It is the native format of LibreOffice Impress and stores slides, layouts, images, notes and transitions in a ZIP package of XML. PowerPoint and Google Slides can open ODP, but complex animations and fonts may not match exactly.

PPTX

Microsoft PowerPoint presentation

PPTX is Microsoft PowerPoint's default presentation format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores slides, layouts, images, charts, speaker notes, transitions and embedded media in a ZIP package of XML. It is the most widely used format for slide decks in business and education. Google Slides, Keynote and LibreOffice Impress open PPTX, though fonts, animations and layout may change slightly.

PPTX converter

ODP files are converted to PPTX when a presentation from a LibreOffice school, public office or Linux desktop has to reach people working in Microsoft 365, where PPTX is the format their templates, upload portals and shared drives assume.

Should the deck stay ODP or become PPTX?

Switching to PPTX

  • Opens without warnings in PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides
  • Accepted by upload forms that list only Office formats
  • Fits company templates and SharePoint workflows

What you give up

  • Leaves the ISO 26300 open standard some institutions require for archiving
  • Impress-only transitions are simplified
  • Linux fonts may be substituted on Windows

If you came here from a Mac rather than a Linux desktop, the same problem exists in a different shape: see Keynote to PPTX. The document converter lists every other OpenDocument path.

ODP to PPTX questions

PowerPoint already opens .odp files. Why convert?

PowerPoint opens them through a compatibility layer, has done so since Office 2007 Service Pack 2, and warns that some content may be lost or changed. Every person who receives the .odp goes through that warning again. Converting once gives everyone the same PPTX, which upload forms and Office templates also expect.

Which fonts change when an Impress deck reaches Windows?

Fonts that ship with Linux and LibreOffice, such as DejaVu Sans or Noto, are often missing on Office machines and get substituted. Liberation Sans, Serif and Mono are designed with the same character widths as Arial, Times New Roman and Courier New, so text set in them keeps its line breaks.

Are Impress custom animations kept?

Entrance, emphasis and exit effects that PowerPoint also has are carried over. Impress-only effects and some of its slide transitions fall back to a simpler effect, so run the slideshow once in PowerPoint before presenting.

Does the converted file still work in LibreOffice?

Yes. LibreOffice Impress opens PPTX files, so the person who made the deck can keep editing the converted version. If several people edit it, choose one format and stick to it to avoid round-trip drift.

Can I convert Writer and Calc files from the same suite?

Yes, through their own pages: ODT to DOCX for Writer documents and ODS to XLSX for Calc spreadsheets. Both follow the same OpenDocument to Office Open XML path as this one.
