Markdown tables that need to become spreadsheets

Pipe tables began in PHP Markdown Extra and became a standard part of Markdown through GitHub Flavored Markdown, whose 2017 specification defines them as an extension to CommonMark. Since then they have spread everywhere: README comparisons, Obsidian notes, Notion and Confluence exports, and the answers of AI chat assistants.

The moment someone wants to sort by price, add a column or chart the figures, the table has to leave Markdown. Copying the text into Excel puts every row into a single cell with the pipes still in it. Converting reads the table structure, so each value lands in its own column. If the data is already in CSV form, CSV to Markdown covers the opposite trip.

Markdown and XLSX format facts

MD

Markdown

Markdown is a lightweight markup syntax created by John Gruber in 2004. It uses plain-text symbols, such as # for headings, * for emphasis and - for lists, that stay readable as raw text and convert cleanly to HTML. It is the standard for README files, documentation, wikis, note apps and many static site generators. There are several dialects, such as CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, which differ in details like tables. Any text editor can open .md files.

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

Markdown goes to Excel when a table written for reading has to be calculated with: a comparison table from documentation, a list of tasks or prices kept in a wiki, or a table an AI assistant produced that now needs sorting and totals.

XLSX or CSV from a Markdown file?

Choose XLSX when

  • A person will read, filter or chart the data
  • The file holds several tables that should stay apart
  • Alignment and bold headers should survive

Choose CSV when

  • The table feeds a database, a shop or a script
  • Only one table matters and plain text is fine
  • Your Excel locale expects semicolons; set them under CSV delimiter

Markdown to Excel questions

Can I convert a table an AI chatbot gave me?

Yes. Chat assistants usually format tables as Markdown pipe tables, and copying the raw text keeps that syntax. Paste it into any text editor, save the file with the .md extension and upload it. If the copied text has no pipes, the app copied the rendered table; paste that straight into Excel instead.

What happens to the text around the tables?

The workbook is built from the tables. Headings, paragraphs and lists between them are not needed to fill cells and are left out, so a long README with two tables gives a workbook with two tables.

Do the colons in the separator row do anything?

They set alignment: :--- is left, :---: is centered and ---: is right, and the cells in Excel are aligned to match. A separator without colons leaves Excel's own defaults, text left and numbers right.

How do I keep a pipe character inside a cell?

Escape it as \|. GitHub Flavored Markdown reads an unescaped pipe as a column boundary, so a value such as A|B would otherwise split across two cells and shift the rest of that row.

How do I send the edited sheet back to the Markdown file?

Convert the workbook with Excel to Markdown. Each sheet comes back as a pipe table you can paste into the README or wiki page.
