Markdown to Word: who needs it
John Gruber published Markdown in 2004, with input from Aaron Swartz, as a way to write for the web without typing HTML tags. It spread far beyond blogs: README files on GitHub, note apps such as Obsidian and Bear, documentation sites and many writers' own drafts are all plain text with a few symbols. The original description left edge cases open, which is why the CommonMark project published a precise specification in 2014.
The trouble is that most of the working world reviews documents in Word. Developers write a design document in Markdown and the architecture board wants a DOCX with comments; students take lecture notes in Typora and the thesis office wants a Word template; technical writers keep docs in Git and a customer asks for a printable manual. A markdown to word converter bridges that gap without retyping.
How Markdown syntax maps to Word styles
| You write | Word shows |
|---|---|
| `# Title`, `## Section` | Heading 1, Heading 2 styles |
| `**bold**`, `*italic*` | Bold and italic text |
| `- item`, `1. item` | Bulleted and numbered lists |
| `| a | b |` pipe table | A Word table with a header row |
| `[label](https://…)` | A clickable hyperlink |
| `> quoted line` | An indented quote paragraph |
| Fenced code block | Monospaced paragraph text |
Prepare the .md file before converting
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Start each section with # headings in order, without skipping levels | Expect images stored only on your laptop to appear; a .md file holds links, not pictures |
| Leave a blank line before lists and tables | Rely on app-specific syntax such as callouts or wiki links |
| Use web addresses for images you want in the Word file | Use tab-indented text for tables; only pipe tables become Word tables |
| Keep one document per .md file | Put page layout in Markdown; set margins in Word afterwards |
After converting, the fastest way to give the document a house look is Word's Design tab or your organization's template, since everything already uses built-in styles. If the reader only needs to read and print, Markdown to PDF skips Word entirely. Other text formats, from HTML to ODT, are covered by the document converter.
Markdown and DOCX format facts
MD
Markdown
Markdown is a lightweight markup syntax created by John Gruber in 2004. It uses plain-text symbols, such as # for headings, * for emphasis and - for lists, that stay readable as raw text and convert cleanly to HTML. It is the standard for README files, documentation, wikis, note apps and many static site generators. There are several dialects, such as CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, which differ in details like tables. Any text editor can open .md files.

DOCX
Microsoft Word document
DOCX is Microsoft Word's default document format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard (ECMA-376, ISO/IEC 29500). It is a ZIP package of XML files holding text, styles, images, tables, comments and tracked changes. It is the most common format for editable documents in offices, schools and job applications. Layout can shift slightly between Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages, especially with complex formatting. Most word processors open DOCX files.

Markdown becomes DOCX at the moment a draft leaves the writer: a report handed to a manager, an article sent to an editor who works in track changes, or a thesis chapter for a supervisor who only opens Word.
Markdown to DOCX questions
Will my headings appear in Word's Navigation Pane?
Yes. Each # to ###### line is mapped to Word's built-in Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles, the same ones Word uses for the Navigation Pane and for an automatic table of contents under References. Insert the table of contents after converting and it fills itself.
Which Markdown syntax does the converter understand?
Standard CommonMark syntax for headings, emphasis, lists, quotes, code and links, plus the pipe tables and strikethrough popularized by GitHub Flavored Markdown. Anything outside those, such as custom shortcodes from a static site generator, comes through as the literal text you typed.
Do Obsidian notes with [[wiki links]] convert?
The note converts, but double-bracket links are an Obsidian convention, not Markdown, so they appear as plain text with the brackets. Replace them with normal label links first if the Word reader should be able to click them.
Why not paste the Markdown preview into Word?
Pasting from a preview window brings the app's web styles along, so you get odd fonts, gray code boxes and spacing that does not match Word's styles. Converting builds the document from Word's own styles, which your reader can restyle in one click.
How do I get Word edits back into Markdown?
Use DOCX to MD on the edited file. Headings, lists, bold text, links and tables come back as Markdown; Word-only details such as fonts, colors and page breaks are dropped.
