Why Excel tables end up in Markdown

Developers, technical writers and researchers keep their text in Markdown because it diffs cleanly in Git and renders on GitHub, GitLab and most wikis. The data they write about, test results, pricing tiers, API limits, often starts life in a spreadsheet. Copying cells out of Excel gives tab-separated text, not a table, and building the pipes and dashes by hand breaks as soon as one value changes.

A second reason has appeared recently: people paste tables into AI assistants, and a Markdown table keeps rows and columns readable as plain text where a raw paste does not. For a web page rather than a Markdown file, Excel to HTML writes a real <table> instead.

GitHub renders pipe tables in READMEs, issues, pull requests and wikis.

XLSX and Markdown format facts

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

Markdown

Markdown is a lightweight markup syntax created by John Gruber in 2004. It uses plain-text symbols, such as # for headings, * for emphasis and - for lists, that stay readable as raw text and convert cleanly to HTML. It is the standard for README files, documentation, wikis, note apps and many static site generators. There are several dialects, such as CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, which differ in details like tables. Any text editor can open .md files.

MD converter

Excel sheets are converted to Markdown when tabular data has to appear inside text written in Markdown: a feature comparison in a GitHub README, a status table in a wiki, a reference list in an Obsidian vault or data pasted into an AI prompt.

What a Markdown table cannot hold

  • Formulas: only their results are written
  • Merged cells: the value sits in the first cell
  • Colors, borders and conditional formatting
  • Line breaks inside a cell, unless written as <br>

Excel to MD questions

What happens to merged cells?

Markdown tables have no way to merge cells, so the value is written into the first cell of the merged area and the cells it covered stay empty. Unmerge headers in Excel first if you want every column labeled.

Are formulas written into the table, or their results?

The results, exactly as Excel displays them, including number formats like 1,250.00 or 12%. Markdown has no formulas, so the table is a snapshot of the sheet when you converted it.

Why are my dates fine in Excel but odd elsewhere?

Excel stores dates as serial numbers counted from 1900, and for compatibility with Lotus 1-2-3 it even treats 1900 as a leap year. The converter writes the date as the cell displays it, not the serial, so 03/15/2026 stays readable; set the date format you want in Excel before converting.

Is there a limit to how wide a Markdown table can be?

Markdown sets none, but readers do. GitHub scrolls wide tables sideways, and a 30-column table is hard to read in any editor. Hide columns that are not needed or split the sheet first.

Can I convert a Google Sheets spreadsheet?

Download it from Google Sheets with File > Download > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) and upload that file. Each tab of the spreadsheet comes through as its own table.

How do I get a Markdown table back into a spreadsheet?

Use Markdown to Excel, which reads pipe tables back into cells. For data already exported as CSV, CSV to Markdown skips the workbook entirely.
