HTML to Markdown Converter

HTML is how content is delivered; Markdown is how a growing number of people prefer to write and store it. This converter turns .html files into readable .md text, so a blog archive, help center or saved article can move into a static site, a notes vault or a Git repository.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload HTML files

Add .html or .htm files, up to 20 per batch and 95 MB each. A page saved from a browser, a CMS export or a hand-written file all work.

  2. 2

    Check the text settings

Convert to is Markdown, Formatting is Simple, Text encoding is UTF-8 and Line endings are LF, which suits Git, static site generators and macOS or Linux editors.

  3. 3

    Convert to Markdown

Press Convert to Markdown, then open the .md in any text editor to remove leftover menus or footers. Uploaded files are deleted after 30 minutes.

To convert HTML to Markdown, upload the .html file and press Convert to Markdown: headings become # lines, links become text, lists keep their bullets and numbers, and simple tables become pipe tables.

HTML to Markdown: who needs it and why

John Gruber published Markdown in 2004, with Aaron Swartz as his collaborator, as a way to write for the web in plain text that reads naturally even before it is rendered. Twenty years later it is the native format of GitHub READMEs, static site generators such as Jekyll and Hugo, documentation tools, note apps like Obsidian and the content folders of many modern websites.

That creates a steady flow in the opposite direction from the usual one. Teams leaving a database-driven CMS need years of posts as .md files. Writers clip articles into a notes vault. Developers move an old HTML help section into a docs-as-code repository where changes are reviewed in pull requests. In each case the HTML is the only copy, and rewriting it by hand is not realistic. From Word documents, the same job is DOCX to Markdown.

HTML to Markdown converter output: what to expect

Class names, inline styles, scripts and layout divs are dropped, because Markdown describes meaning, not appearance. Bold and italic become double and single asterisks, line breaks inside a paragraph are joined, and character entities such as   turn into ordinary characters in UTF-8. Expect the .md file to be a fraction of the HTML's size: the words stay and the markup goes.

MythMarkdown can reproduce any HTML layout.

FactIt covers text structure only; columns, colors and positioned boxes have no Markdown syntax and are lost or left as raw HTML.

MythA converted page is ready to publish as is.

FactMenus, cookie banners and footers come along; trim them, and add front matter if your site generator expects it.

MythMarkdown output works the same everywhere.

FactTables and strikethrough need a GitHub Flavored Markdown renderer; strict CommonMark tools show them as plain text.

HTML and Markdown format facts

HTML

HyperText Markup Language

HTML is the markup language of the web, first described by Tim Berners-Lee in the early 1990s and now maintained by WHATWG as a living standard. An HTML file describes headings, paragraphs, links, tables, images and forms, while styling usually comes from CSS. Every browser renders it, and it is also used for email templates and saved web pages. A single HTML file often depends on external images and stylesheets, so it may look broken when moved on its own.

Markdown

Markdown is a lightweight markup syntax created by John Gruber in 2004. It uses plain-text symbols, such as # for headings, * for emphasis and - for lists, that stay readable as raw text and convert cleanly to HTML. It is the standard for README files, documentation, wikis, note apps and many static site generators. There are several dialects, such as CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, which differ in details like tables. Any text editor can open .md files.

HTML is converted to Markdown when content leaves the place that rendered it: a blog moving to a static site generator, a help center going into a Git-based docs repo, or articles saved into an Obsidian vault where plain, readable text matters more than markup.

HTML to MD questions

Can I convert a saved web page together with its images?

The converter reads the .html file you upload. Image tags become Markdown image links that point to the same paths or URLs the page used, so images hosted online keep working. A browser's local image folder from Save Page As is not uploaded with the file; copy it next to the .md and the relative paths still match.

What happens to menus, sidebars and footers?

Everything in the file is converted, because the tool cannot know which part of a page is the article. For clean results, save the post without its theme where your CMS allows it, or delete the navigation lines from the top and bottom of the Markdown afterwards.

How do I move WordPress posts into Hugo or Jekyll?

WordPress's built-in export is an XML file, not HTML, so convert each post's HTML instead, copied from the code editor or saved from the browser. Then add front matter at the top of each .md, the block between two lines of three dashes that holds the title, date and tags. Both Hugo and Jekyll read it from there.

Why do some tables look odd in the Markdown?

Markdown tables, added by GitHub Flavored Markdown, have one header row and no merged cells. A simple HTML table converts cleanly; a table with colspan, rowspan or nested lists has no Markdown form, so it is flattened. Markdown allows raw HTML, so you can paste the original table back where layout matters.

Is Markdown a good format for feeding pages to AI or search tools?

Often, yes. Markdown keeps the structure that matters, headings, lists, links and emphasis, while dropping attributes, scripts and styling, so the same article becomes much shorter and cleaner to process. Use HTML to TXT if you want no markup at all.
