TXT to HTML Converter

A text file dropped onto a web server shows up as one long run of words or as raw characters. Convert it to HTML and the paragraphs, line breaks and special characters reach the browser the way you typed them.

Answer

How do I convert a TXT file to HTML?

Upload the .txt and press Convert to HTML. You get a complete HTML5 page with a UTF-8 declaration, your paragraphs wrapped in <p> tags and every <, > and & escaped so it displays as text.

Why a browser mangles a raw .txt file

A web server sends a .txt file with the type text/plain, and the browser shows it in a fixed-width font with no margins, no links and no way to style it. Rename the same file to .html and the opposite problem appears: HTML treats every run of spaces and line breaks as a single space, so a ten-paragraph file renders as one wall of text.

Special characters cause the second kind of damage. In HTML the < sign opens a tag and & starts an entity, so a line like if a < b && c > d or an email address in angle brackets gets partly swallowed. A proper conversion writes those as &lt;, &amp; and &gt;, which browsers show as the original characters.

The people who hit this are rarely web developers. They are support teams publishing release notes, teachers posting a reading, writers moving an archive of stories online and anyone whose content tool only accepts .html uploads.

How each Formatting setting shapes the HTML

The default for text files. Blank lines separate paragraphs, single line breaks inside a paragraph are kept, and the result uses only structural tags.

  • <p> per paragraph
  • <br> for short lines such as addresses or verse
  • No inline styles to clean up

TXT and HTML format facts

TXT

Plain text

A TXT file contains only plain characters with no formatting, fonts, images or layout. Modern text files are usually encoded in UTF-8, which covers every language, though older files may use other encodings and show garbled characters. Plain text is tiny, never becomes obsolete and opens on every device, from phones to servers. It cannot hold bold text, tables or pictures, so structure must be expressed with spacing or simple markup.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language

HTML is the markup language of the web, first described by Tim Berners-Lee in the early 1990s and now maintained by WHATWG as a living standard. An HTML file describes headings, paragraphs, links, tables, images and forms, while styling usually comes from CSS. Every browser renders it, and it is also used for email templates and saved web pages. A single HTML file often depends on external images and stylesheets, so it may look broken when moved on its own.

Plain text is turned into HTML when words written in Notepad or exported by another program have to be published: a changelog on a product site, a public notice, a transcript or a story that needs paragraphs and links in a browser.

HTML began in 1991 as a short list of tags Tim Berners-Lee wrote for documents at CERN. The W3C published HTML5 as a Recommendation in October 2014, and since a 2019 agreement between the two bodies, the WHATWG's HTML Living Standard is the single version browsers follow. The file you download here is written to that standard, so it opens the same way in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge.

Text files from Windows used to arrive in the Windows-1252 code page; Notepad has saved new files as UTF-8 by default since Windows 10 version 1903. If the text is going into a Word document instead of onto the web, TXT to Word is the better route, and the document converter covers the other text formats.

TXT to HTML questions

Can I just change the file extension from .txt to .html?

The browser will open it, but it will read your text as markup. Line breaks collapse into spaces, so the whole file becomes one paragraph, and anything that looks like a tag, such as <name> in an email header, disappears from view. Converting adds the paragraph tags and escapes those characters for you.

Why do accented letters show up as strange symbols on my page?

The page and the browser disagree about the encoding. The converted file declares <meta charset="utf-8"> inside the first 1,024 bytes, where the HTML standard asks for it. If your source was saved in Windows-1252 or Shift_JIS, pick that under Text encoding so the characters are read correctly before they are written out.

Will a poem or song lyrics keep their line breaks?

Yes. Short lines inside a stanza stay on their own lines, and blank lines between stanzas start a new paragraph, so the shape of the text survives. Browsers would otherwise squeeze every line of a poem into one block.

Is HTML or Markdown the better target for my notes?

HTML when the text goes straight to a browser, an email template or a help center that accepts pasted markup. TXT to Markdown when the notes will live in a repository, Obsidian or a static site generator that builds the HTML itself.

How do I get plain text back out of an HTML page?

Use HTML to text. It strips the tags, turns paragraphs back into blank-line breaks and decodes entities such as &amp; into the characters they stand for.
