Excel to LaTeX Converter

Results usually live in a spreadsheet long before they appear in a paper, and retyping them cell by cell with ampersands and double backslashes is where typos creep in. Convert the sheet to LaTeX and paste the table into your document instead.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the spreadsheet

    Add an .xlsx, .xls, .ods, .numbers or .csv file, up to 95 MB. Tidy the sheet first so it holds only the table you want to publish.

  2. 2

    Pick the sheet

    Spreadsheet sheets is set to First. Choose All if each sheet holds a separate table you need. Formatting on Simple keeps bold text and merged cells without colors.

  3. 3

    Convert and paste

    Press Convert to LaTeX (.tex), open the .tex file and copy the table into your document, in Overleaf or any local editor. Files are deleted 30 minutes after upload.

Upload the sheet, press Convert to LaTeX (.tex), and paste the tabular code into your paper: cells are separated with ampersands, rows end with double backslashes, and characters like %, & and _ arrive already escaped.

Excel to LaTeX: why tables are the painful part

LaTeX, written by Leslie Lamport on top of Donald Knuth's TeX and first released in the early 1980s, is the standard for papers in mathematics, physics, computer science and economics. It typesets text and equations beautifully, but its tables are written by hand as plain markup, and a 12-column results table is a few hundred ampersands that all have to line up.

Researchers, students and analysts therefore keep their numbers in Excel or LibreOffice Calc and need the same numbers in a .tex file. The bigger the table and the more often the data changes, the more a conversion saves: rerun the analysis, convert again, paste again. If your table comes from a PDF rather than a spreadsheet, PDF to LaTeX handles that route.

What the converted LaTeX table looks like

Example tabular for a small three-column sheet
\begin{table}[ht]
  \centering
  \begin{tabular}{lrr}
    \hline
    Sample & Mass (g) & Yield (\%) \\
    \hline
    A\_1 & 12.40 & 81.5 \\
    B\_2 & 9.85 & 77.0 \\
    \hline
  \end{tabular}
  \caption{Results by sample}
\end{table}

Compile errors after pasting a converted table

  • Misplaced alignment tab character &

    The table was pasted outside a tabular environment, or a cell edited later contains a bare ampersand. Keep it inside the environment and write \& for a literal one.

  • Undefined control sequence

    You added commands such as \toprule or an S column without loading booktabs or siunitx. Add the \usepackage line to the preamble.

  • Overfull \hbox warning and a table running into the margin

    The table is wider than \textwidth. Reduce the font size, abbreviate headers or scale the table as described in the questions below.

Excel and LaTeX format facts

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

TEX

TeX / LaTeX source

A .tex file is the source code of a TeX or LaTeX document. TeX was created by Donald Knuth in 1978, and LaTeX, a set of macros built on top of it by Leslie Lamport, is the standard for academic papers in mathematics, physics and computer science. Authors write plain text with commands for structure and equations, and a compiler produces a precisely typeset PDF. It produces excellent typography and maths, but has a steep learning curve and needs a TeX distribution or an online editor such as Overleaf to build.

Spreadsheets become LaTeX when numbers analyzed in Excel have to appear in a typeset paper, thesis or report, and generating the tabular code avoids retyping every cell and escaping every special character by hand.

Excel to LaTeX questions

Can the table look like a journal table with booktabs?

Yes. Load the booktabs package in your preamble and replace the top, middle and bottom horizontal rules with \toprule, \midrule and \bottomrule. Many journals and thesis templates prefer this style because it drops vertical lines and spaces rows more evenly.

My sheet is too wide for the page. What can I do?

Try a smaller font size such as \small inside the table environment first. If that is not enough, wrap the tabular in \resizebox{\textwidth}{!}{...} from the graphicx package, or place the table on a landscape page with the pdflscape package. Splitting it into two tables is often the most readable option.

Will a table with hundreds of rows break across pages?

A plain tabular never breaks; it runs off the bottom of the page. Change the environment to longtable from the longtable package, which repeats the header on each page, or put the full data in an appendix or supplementary file.

How do I line numbers up on the decimal point?

Use the siunitx package and give numeric columns the S column type instead of r or c. It aligns values on the decimal marker and can round them consistently, which matters when Excel shows different numbers of decimals in one column.

Does the converted .tex compile in Overleaf?

Yes, paste the table into any Overleaf project or upload the file; the packages mentioned on this page are included in Overleaf's TeX Live installation. To compile a finished document into a PDF without an editor, use TeX to PDF.
