How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Save or collect the HTML

Use the HTML file a system exported, or save a web page in your browser with Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on a Mac) as Webpage, HTML only. Upload up to 20 files of 95 MB each.

  2. 2

Choose how much styling to keep

Formatting on Keep all carries bold headers and cell colors over where Excel supports them; Simple writes the bare table structure.

  3. 3

    Convert to XLSX

Press Convert to XLSX and open the workbook in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice Calc.

Answer

How do I convert HTML to Excel?

Upload the .html or .htm file, keep XLSX as the target and press Convert to XLSX. The converter reads the table elements in the page and writes each row and cell into the workbook.

Why copying an HTML table into Excel goes wrong

Tables arrived on the web with RFC 1942 in 1996 and were part of HTML 3.2 the next year, and since then almost every report, price list and statistics page has used them. Copying one from the browser into Excel looks easy until the paste lands in one column, picks up links and icons, splits a cell over two rows, or turns 1-2 into a date.

Converting the file avoids the clipboard entirely: the converter reads the table, row and cell elements themselves, so the grid in the workbook matches the grid in the markup. That matters most for long tables, pages with several tables, and exports you receive every week and do not want to clean by hand.

HTML files people convert to Excel

  1. Fake .xls exports

Online banking, school and HR systems often send an HTML table named report.xls. Excel opens it with a format warning.

  2. Saved web pages

League tables, government statistics and product comparisons saved from the browser as an HTML file.

  3. Reporting tools

Analytics, monitoring and accounting packages that offer an HTML report alongside or instead of a spreadsheet.

Excel limits for large HTML tables

rows per sheet
1,048,576
columns per sheet (A to XFD)
16,384
characters in one cell
32,767
HTML files per batch
20 × 95 MB

Those are the limits of the XLSX grid since Excel 2007, and real HTML tables rarely come near them. The practical limit is usually the page itself: an infinite-scroll page saved from the browser only contains the rows that had loaded, so scroll to the end, or use the site's own export, before saving. For a table locked inside a PDF instead of a web page, PDF to CSV does the extraction, and the data converter turns the result into any other format.

HTML and XLSX format facts

HTML

HyperText Markup Language

HTML is the markup language of the web, first described by Tim Berners-Lee in the early 1990s and now maintained by WHATWG as a living standard. An HTML file describes headings, paragraphs, links, tables, images and forms, while styling usually comes from CSS. Every browser renders it, and it is also used for email templates and saved web pages. A single HTML file often depends on external images and stylesheets, so it may look broken when moved on its own.

XLSX

Microsoft Excel workbook

XLSX is Microsoft Excel's default workbook format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores multiple sheets, formulas, formatting, charts, pivot tables and data validation in a ZIP package of XML. It supports over a million rows per sheet and is the default exchange format for business spreadsheets. Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers open XLSX, though macros and advanced features may not carry over.

HTML goes to Excel when numbers published for reading have to be worked with: a results table from a web page, a report a system only exports as HTML, or a pseudo-.xls file that should become a proper workbook.

HTML to Excel questions

Excel says the file format and extension don't match. Why?

Many web apps and older business systems offer an Excel export that is really an HTML table saved with an .xls name, because Excel has long been able to open HTML. Recent versions warn about the mismatch and may open the file in Protected View. Rename it to .html, convert it here, and you get a genuine XLSX that opens without the warning.

Can I convert a table straight from a website address?

This tool works on files, so save the page first: in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, use Save Page As and pick the HTML-only option. For a public page you want to keep updated, Google Sheets' IMPORTHTML function can also pull a table by its position on the page, though not from pages behind a login.

Is HTML to Excel different from HTML to CSV?

Yes. CSV holds one table as plain text with no types, colors or extra sheets, which suits imports into other software. XLSX keeps a page with several tables organized and keeps cells typed for formulas. For an import file, use HTML to CSV instead.

Does the page's styling come into the workbook?

With Formatting on Keep all, bold header rows, cell background colors and text alignment are carried over as far as Excel can show them. Page layout, menus and fonts loaded from the web are not part of a table, so they are left out.

What happens to cells that span several columns?

A header written with colspan or rowspan, such as a Quarter heading over three month columns, becomes a merged cell in Excel. If you plan to sort or build a PivotTable, unmerge those cells afterwards, since Excel cannot sort ranges that contain merged cells of different sizes.
