Australia Visa Photo Size
Australia gives a range rather than one fixed size: 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with the face 32–36 mm from chin to crown. This page makes a 35 × 45 mm photo, inside that range, for an ImmiAccount upload or a print.

Quality is lowered until the photo is at or just under this size; tiny files are padded up to the spec's minimum.
300 DPI is the print standard for passport photos; a 35×45 mm photo is then 413×531 px.
Place several copies on a 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo print or an A4 page, ready for a photo kiosk or home printer.
How many photos on the sheet. A 4×6 in print fits 6 photos of 2×2 in or 6 of 35×45 mm; an A4 sheet fits more.

Australia visa photo size in pixels for ImmiAccount
Most Australian visas are lodged online through ImmiAccount, where the photo is attached like any other document. Home Affairs describes it in millimeters, not pixels. This preset writes a 413 × 531 px JPEG, which is 35 × 45 mm at 300 DPI, the smallest corner of the allowed range and the size most other visas use.
With Head-size guide on, the crop shows the 32–36 mm chin-to-crown band, and Auto-centre face places your eyes and chin inside it. The background is replaced with the color you pick, removing the doorframes and shadows that sink most home photos.
ImmiAccount lists the accepted file types and size limit next to each attachment; if your file is refused there, turn on Limit file size under Advanced settings and set the figure shown, or check the current guidance on the Home Affairs site. Australia has issued visas electronically, without a label in the passport, since 2015, so this upload is usually the only photo your application uses.
Australian visa photo myths
MythAustralia needs a larger photo than other countries.
FactThe range starts at 35 × 45 mm, the most common size worldwide; anything up to 40 × 50 mm is also fine.
MythA selfie at arm's length is good enough.
FactA close lens distorts the nose and ears. Have someone take the photo from about 1.5 m and crop it here.
MythA blue background looks more official.
FactOnly plain white or light grey is listed. Blue is used for some other countries' documents, not Australia's.
Why Home Affairs asks for a new photo
The usual reasons are practical: the face is too small or too large for the 32–36 mm band, the head is tilted, hair covers the eyes, there is a shadow on one side of the face, or the photo has been retouched or filtered. Glasses cause glare and frame shadows, so it is safest to take them off; head coverings are accepted for religious or medical reasons only if the full face from chin to forehead is visible.
Clothing matters less than people think, but a white shirt against a white background can make your shoulders disappear. The what to wear for a passport photo guide covers colors that work. Applying to several countries at once? The visa photo maker lists the other sizes, and the Schengen visa photo size page uses the same 35 × 45 mm crop.
Australia visa photo questions
Can I use the same photo for an Australian visa and an Australian passport?
The size, head range and background rules are the same, so one portrait can serve both. The passport adds paperwork: for a first adult passport, for example, a guarantor endorses the back of one printed photo. Check passports.gov.au for who needs one.
Do I need a photo for the Australian ETA?
Not a prepared one. The Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601) is applied for in the AustralianETA app, which reads your passport chip and takes a live photo of your face with the phone camera. A file from this page is not used there.
Is white or light grey better for an Australia visa photo?
Both are acceptable. White is safer if you will reuse the photo for another country. Choose light grey when very light hair or skin would blend into white.
How recent must the photo be for an Australian visa?
Taken within the last six months, and it must still look like you. A photo from before a beard, a large change in weight or new glasses can be refused even inside that window.
Does each family member need a separate photo in ImmiAccount?
Yes. Each applicant in a family application, children included, attaches their own photo. Make one file per person with the same settings and name them clearly before uploading.
