SSC Photo Resize
For years the Staff Selection Commission asked for a 20–50 KB JPG photo and a 10–20 KB signature, and countless exam forms copied that rule. This page makes the photo half of it, a 200 × 230 px JPG of about 45 KB, and explains how the newer live-capture step on ssc.gov.in changes what you upload.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Quality is lowered until the photo is at or just under this size; tiny files are padded up to the spec's minimum.
300 DPI is the print standard for passport photos; a 35×45 mm photo is then 413×531 px.
Place several copies on a 4×6 in (10×15 cm) photo print or an A4 page, ready for a photo kiosk or home printer.
How many photos on the sheet. A 4×6 in print fits 6 photos of 2×2 in or 6 of 35×45 mm; an A4 sheet fits more.

The Staff Selection Commission moved its applications to the new ssc.gov.in portal in 2024, and asked candidates to complete a new One Time Registration. Part of that change was live photo capture: the form opens your camera, you face it without a cap or glasses, and the system stores the frame. The point is that the face on file is yours, taken at the moment you apply, not an edited or old picture.
So why resize a photo at all? Because the old SSC numbers live on. State Staff Selection Commissions, bank exams, police and teacher recruitment portals and many university forms still ask for a 20–50 KB JPG at around 200 × 230 px, and some SSC exams have asked candidates to bring printed passport photos to the exam hall. The preset produces exactly that file. For the Indian print sizes behind it, see passport size photo size in India.

SSC photo resize myths
MythA smaller file is always safer.
FactFiles under 20 KB are rejected too, and very low quality makes the face unrecognizable for verification.
MythAny passport photo can be squeezed to 50 KB.
FactThe face must fill most of a 200 × 230 px frame; a wide studio crop leaves it too small after resizing.
MythThe signature can be typed or drawn on screen.
FactIt must be your handwritten signature, scanned or photographed, and it has to match the one you sign in the exam hall.
SSC photo and signature questions
What are the SSC photo and signature sizes?
Under the older upload rule used in SSC notices up to 2023: photo JPG, 20–50 KB, about 3.5 × 4.5 cm; signature JPG, 10–20 KB. Notices from 2024 onward keep the 10–20 KB signature, with dimensions given as about 6.0 × 2.0 cm, and capture the photo live.
Do I still upload a photo for SSC CGL or CHSL?
In the 2024 and 2025 cycles the application module took a live photograph through the webcam or the phone camera instead of a file upload. Check the notice for your exam year, because SSC has changed the method between cycles and may again.
How do I reduce my signature to 10–20 KB?
Sign in black ink on plain white paper, crop tightly around the signature and save it as JPG. Then run it through compress signature to 20 KB, which keeps the strokes sharp while bringing the file into the window.
Why is my 200 × 230 px photo larger than 50 KB?
Phone photos are saved at high quality with extra metadata. Limit file size lowers the JPG quality step by step until the file is at or just under the target, so leave it on and keep the target at 45 KB.
Which other exams use the same 20–50 KB photo rule?
IBPS bank exams have long used 200 × 230 px and 20–50 KB for the photo, and many state recruitment boards copied the SSC numbers. Their signature rules differ slightly, so read each notice; for UPSC the limits are much larger, see UPSC photo resize.
