India uses more than one photo size, depending on where you apply. Here is the 35 × 45 mm photo used on most Indian forms, the 2 × 2 in photo asked for by Indian missions abroad and the square e-Visa upload, all made from one portrait.

The question "what size is an Indian passport photo" has a surprising answer for people applying at home: none. At a Passport Seva Kendra the photo is captured by the centre's camera during your appointment, alongside fingerprints. You still need printed 35 × 45 mm photos for many other documents, and 2 × 2 in photos if you apply from abroad.
Outside India, each embassy or consulate sets its own photo rules, and the missions in the United States ask for the square 2 × 2 in format. Open the photo instructions on your mission's website before printing; some specify a background shade or a number of copies.
For the many Indian forms that say only "recent passport size photograph", 35 × 45 mm on white is the safe default, and the passport size photo size in India page lists the variants you will see on job and exam notifications.

Indian passport and visa photo questions
What is the Indian passport size photo in cm?
3.5 cm wide by 4.5 cm high, which is 35 × 45 mm. At 300 DPI that is 413 × 531 px, the file this tool produces for the India spec. It is the size meant by "passport size" on Indian bank, college and government forms.
Do I need to bring a photo to the Passport Seva Kendra?
For an application processed at a Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra in India, your photo is captured on site together with your fingerprints, so you do not upload or bring one for the passport itself. Check your appointment letter for annexures that need a pasted photo.
What are the Indian visa photo requirements for foreign nationals?
The e-Visa on indianvisaonline.gov.in takes a square JPEG between 10 KB and 1 MB with a plain light or white background and the full face visible. Choose Custom size with equal width and height in px, then turn on Limit file size if the upload is refused.
Is 2 × 2 inch photo the same as the Indian passport size?
No. 2 × 2 in is 51 × 51 mm, a square, while the Indian form size is 35 × 45 mm, a portrait rectangle. Indian embassies and consulates in countries such as the United States ask for 2 × 2 in, so the size depends on the office that receives your file.
Can the background be off-white or blue?
Indian passport and visa photos should be on plain white. Blue backgrounds appear on some school and office ID cards but not on passport or visa photos; Background replaces whatever wall you stood against.
How small does the file have to be for exam and job portals?
It depends on the notification. Exam boards usually set both a pixel size and a KB window, for example a minimum and a maximum such as 20–50 KB. Use the dedicated presets like SSC photo resize, or reduce the JPG with compress image to 20 KB.
