Passport Size Photo Size in India

Ask any studio in India for a passport size photo and you get a 3.5 × 4.5 cm print, usually as a strip of eight or a full sheet. This page makes that same 35 × 45 mm photo from your own picture and lays 30 copies on an A4 page for a home or shop printer.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Start from a plain-wall photo

Stand half a meter in front of a light wall, face the phone straight on and keep your shoulders in the frame. Daylight from a window beats a tube light overhead.

  2. 2

Let the preset set 3.5 × 4.5 cm

The page opens with India passport & visa — 35×45 mm, a white Background and Print layout set to an A4 sheet of 30 photos with Cut lines.

  3. 3

    Print or upload

Press Make and print the A4 file at 100% scale on photo paper. For an online form, switch Print layout to Single photo and download the 413 × 531 px JPG instead.

Passport size in India is 3.5 × 4.5 cm (35 × 45 mm), which is 413 × 531 px at 300 DPI, in color on a white background.

Indian passport from abroad

2 × 2 in, used by many Indian missions

The 35 × 45 mm print is the one most people need, and it is also the ICAO size used across Europe, so a single crop serves both a college form and a Schengen visa. In pixels it is 413 × 531 at 300 DPI.

Your own passport photo is a different story: Passport Seva Kendras photograph applicants at the counter, so for the passport itself you rarely bring a print. The square 51 × 51 mm size only comes up when you apply through an Indian embassy or consulate abroad, which generally follow the local 2 × 2 in format.

India passport size photo by document

Banks, schools, colleges, gas connections and mobile SIMs ask for a recent passport size print and rarely say more.

  • 35 × 45 mm, white background
  • Paste, do not staple, over the face
  • Sign across the edge only where the form asks

The A4 file is built at 300 DPI with thin grey Cut lines, so it prints true to size on any inkjet or at a xerox shop as long as the print dialog is set to 100% or Actual size. Fit to page shrinks every photo by a few millimeters, which is the most common reason a home print looks small next to a studio one.

Glossy photo paper gives the closest match to a studio print; plain paper is accepted by some offices but smudges when you paste it. For a single photo on a 4 × 6 in print from a photo lab, switch Print layout to the 4 × 6 in sheet instead.

Before you print: what Indian offices look for

A print that passes the counter

  • Face straight, both ears level
  • Eyes open, no tinted glasses
  • No cap or sunglasses unless religious
  • White wall, no shadow behind
  • Recent enough to look like you
  • Trimmed along the cut lines, no white border

Passport size photo India questions

What exactly does a studio mean by passport size photo in India?

In everyday use it means a 3.5 cm wide by 4.5 cm tall color print with a white background, the face filling most of the frame. It is the default size for school admissions, bank KYC, SIM cards, ration cards and most government forms that do not print their own size.

How many passport size photos fit on one A4 page?

With small cutting gaps, 30 photos fit in a 5 × 6 grid, which uses about 175 × 270 mm of the 210 × 297 mm page. That is the layout this page starts with; lower Copies if you only need a few.

Is a stamp size photo the same as a passport size photo?

No. Stamp size has no official definition, but studios usually print it at about 2 × 2.5 cm, roughly half the width of a passport size print. If a form asks for stamp size, choose Custom size and enter the millimeters printed on the form.

Which photo size does a PAN card application need?

The paper Form 49A has a 3.5 × 2.5 cm box for a color photo. For the online application, the PAN preset makes a 213 × 213 px JPG at 200 DPI under 50 KB, the scan size Protean (formerly NSDL) has asked for; check the current guidance on the portal before you submit.

Does the DPI matter when I upload the photo to an Indian portal?

Portals check pixels and kilobytes, not DPI. DPI only decides how big the photo prints: 413 × 531 px prints at exactly 3.5 × 4.5 cm at 300 DPI. If a portal states a size in cm, resize image to cm converts it for you.
