How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload a front-facing photo

Use a well-lit picture taken at eye level, with your whole head and shoulders in frame. JPG, PNG, HEIC and WebP all work.

  2. 2

    Pick the country and background

Choose the document under Country & document; the crop, head guide and pixel size follow it. Set Background to white or light grey and check the face sits inside the guide.

  3. 3

Download the photo or the sheet

Print layout is set to a 4 × 6 in sheet with six copies and Cut lines. Download the single JPG for online forms or the sheet for a photo kiosk.

"Passport size" means different things in different countries. Pick the destination first, then let the tool place your eyes and chin where that country's officers expect them; the crop, not the camera, is what most rejections come down to.

Most of these sizes descend from the same source: ICAO Document 9303, the International Civil Aviation Organization's standard for machine-readable passports. It asks for a full frontal face that fills roughly 70–80% of the photo height, which on a 45 mm photo is the familiar 32–36 mm head range. The United States kept its square 2 × 2 in format, and Canada's passport photo is larger at 50 × 70 mm.

Head size is measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, hair included only if it lies flat. The Head-size guide draws that range on the preview, and Auto-centre face puts your eyes and chin in place before you fine-tune by hand. 1. Keep the sheet at 100%

The 4 × 6 in file is laid out at 300 DPI. In the kiosk or print dialog, turn off "fit to page" or borderless cropping so each photo stays exactly 35 × 45 mm.

  2. Order a standard photo print

Upload the sheet to a drugstore or photo kiosk as a normal 4 × 6 print: six photos for the price of one.

  3. Cut along the guides

Use the thin Cut lines and a ruler with a craft knife. Scissors tend to drift, and a photo trimmed under size can be refused at the counter.

Passport size photo questions

What is the standard passport size photo in cm?

There is no single world size, but 3.5 × 4.5 cm (35 × 45 mm) is used by the UK, the Schengen countries, Australia, Japan, India and many others. The United States and the Philippines use 5.1 × 5.1 cm (2 × 2 in), Canada's passport uses 5 × 7 cm and Chinese visas 3.3 × 4.8 cm.

How many passport photos fit on a 4 × 6 print?

Six photos of 35 × 45 mm fit on a 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) print in two columns of three, with room for cut lines. The sheet costs the same as any single 4 × 6 print at a photo kiosk.

Can I make passport size photos at home with my phone?

Yes, if someone else takes the picture from about 1.5 m away at eye level, facing a window in daylight, against a plain wall. Arm's-length selfies distort the nose; the tool fixes crop and background but not the camera angle.

Which background color should I choose?

White suits the US, India, Canada and China. The UK asks for plain cream or light grey, and light grey is also safe for Schengen visas and Australia. Blue backgrounds are only for a few national IDs and employer badges, so leave it alone unless the form names it.

Is the file small enough for an online application?

The JPG matches the spec's pixel size and stays well below most limits. If a portal sets a strict KB window, turn on Limit file size under Advanced settings, or run the file through compress image to 50 KB afterwards.
