Japan Visa Photo Size

Japan is one of the few countries whose visa photo is square: most Japanese embassies ask for 45 × 45 mm, not the 35 × 45 mm used for Japanese passports. This page crops your picture to that square on white and lays six copies on a 4 × 6 in print.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Check your embassy's checklist first

Open the visa checklist of the embassy or consulate that covers where you live. If it says 35 × 45 mm, switch Country & document to Japan passport — 35×45 mm.

  2. 2

Upload a photo against a plain wall

Face the camera with no hat and no shadow behind you. The Japan visa — 45×45 mm preset centers the face in the square and sets Background to White.

  3. 3

    Print and glue

Press Make to get six 45 × 45 mm photos on a 4 × 6 in sheet with Cut lines. Trim one and glue it into the box on the visa application form.

Japan visa photo size is 45 × 45 mm at most Japanese embassies, in color, on a plain white background, taken within the last six months.

The square format is a visa-form habit, not a passport rule: Japan's own passport photo is 35 × 45 mm with the face 32–36 mm long, but the visa application form most embassies use has a square box. Japanese embassies generally do not print a head-size band for visa photos, so the preset scales the face to fill about 70% of the square's height, the same proportion a studio would use.

At 300 DPI the 45 × 45 mm square is 531 × 531 px. A 4 × 6 in print holds six of them, two across and three down, with room left for Cut lines.

Why a Japan visa photo gets returned

Photos come back for the usual reasons: a dark or patterned background, a cap or sunglasses, a scanned print that looks grainy, or an old picture that no longer matches your face. Clear glasses are generally fine as long as there is no glare over the eyes, but taking them off removes the doubt. If you are touring Asia, the Singapore visa photo size page explains why Singapore wants a different crop again.

Japan visa photo questions

Is the Japan visa photo 45 × 45 mm or 35 × 45 mm?

It depends on the embassy. The Embassy of Japan in India and many others ask for 45 × 45 mm, while the Embassy of Japan in the UK lists 35 × 45 mm. The embassy that receives your application decides, so follow its checklist.

Should the photo be glued or stapled to the Japan visa form?

Glue it. Several Japanese embassies say so explicitly, and a staple through the face damages the photo. Use a thin glue stick so the paper does not ripple.

Does the Japan eVISA need a printed photo?

No. Applicants eligible for the eVISA upload a digital photo on the online form instead of gluing a print. The portal states its own pixel and file-size limits, so check the current guidance before you export; if the file is too big, compress image to 200 KB keeps the pixels intact.

Can I reuse my China or Korea visa photo for Japan?

Not without a new crop. China uses 33 × 48 mm and Korea 35 × 45 mm, both portrait, so neither becomes a 45 × 45 mm square without leaving the head small. Upload the original picture and pick the Japan preset; the China visa photo size page covers the other one.

Does every family member need a separate Japan visa photo?

Yes. Each applicant, children included, fills in their own application form with their own photo. A family picture cut into pieces is not accepted.
