Image to A4 size PDF: what A4 really means

A4 comes from ISO 216, which took over the German DIN 476 paper series introduced in 1922. Its sides are in the ratio 1 : √2, about 1 : 1.414, so a sheet cut in half keeps the same shape: two A5 sheets make an A4, two A4s make an A3. A0 has an area of exactly one square meter, and A4 is one sixteenth of it, 210 × 297 mm.

An image file has no paper size, only pixels and sometimes a DPI tag that most apps ignore. Placing it on an A4 page in a PDF fixes the physical size once, so it prints the same in an office in Berlin or a school in Delhi. Getting there involves three decisions: how much of the page the image covers, how wide the margin is, and which way up the page sits. To choose the crop yourself before using Fill, cut the image to 1 : 1.414 with crop image; how to crop an image to a ratio walks through it.

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

Images are converted to an A4 PDF when a print shop, school or office expects a standard sheet, because a bare image has no paper size and prints at whatever scale the printer driver chooses.

Image to A4 PDF: questions

What is A4 size in pixels for a PDF?

A PDF page has no pixels, only physical dimensions: A4 is 595 × 842 points, a point being 1/72 inch. The pixels belong to the image on it. For sharp print, the image should be about 2480 × 3508 px, which is 300 DPI across the full page; 1240 × 1754 px gives 150 DPI, fine for documents.

Why is there a white band above and below my photo?

Phone photos are 3:4, slightly wider in proportion than A4's 1:1.41. With Fit, a portrait photo filling the 210 mm width is only 280 mm tall, leaving about 17 mm of the 297 mm page empty. Choose Fill page to remove the band at the cost of trimming the sides.

Will my A4 PDF print correctly on US Letter paper?

Letter is 6 mm wider and 18 mm shorter than A4, so the printer either scales the page down by about 6% or clips the bottom edge. For a recipient in North America, set Page size to Letter instead.

Can I make a low-resolution image fill A4 sharply?

No converter can add detail that was never captured. A 600 × 800 px image stretched across A4 prints at roughly 72 DPI and looks soft. Choose Actual size under Image on page to place it at its real print size, smaller but crisp, centered on the sheet.

How do I convert an existing PDF to A4 size?

This page builds A4 pages from images. If you have a PDF with Letter, legal or odd-sized pages, resize PDF to A4 rescales those pages without turning them into pictures.

Which margin should I choose for printing?

Most home and office printers cannot print the outer few millimeters of a sheet. Small (5 mm) is the minimum that avoids clipping on most of them; Medium (10 mm) also leaves room for a hole punch or staples. Use None only when the PDF stays on screen.
