PSD to PDF Converter

A Photoshop document only looks right in software that understands its layers. Converting it to PDF gives a client, a teacher or a print shop the finished artwork as a page they can open, comment on and print.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the Photoshop files

Add up to 50 .psd files, 95 MB each. Large layered posters often come close to that limit, so flatten or crop very big canvases before uploading.

  2. 2

    Keep the canvas size

This page starts with Page size on Same as image and Image on page on Actual size, so the page measures what the canvas measures at its saved resolution.

  3. 3

    Get one PDF per design

Press Convert to PDF. Each PSD becomes its own PDF, downloaded together as a ZIP; switch Output to One PDF to collect a set of mockups into a single file.

Converting PSD to PDF flattens the visible layers into one picture and places it on a page the size of your canvas, so anyone can view the design without Photoshop.

What flattening a Photoshop file means

The PSD format arrived with Photoshop 1.0 in 1990 and has grown ever since: layers, masks, adjustment layers, smart objects, blend modes and text that stays editable. All of that is instructions for Photoshop. A viewer that cannot follow every instruction either shows a blank file or a crude approximation.

Photoshop works around this by saving a merged copy of the whole canvas inside the PSD, the composite image, when the Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility preference is on. That composite is what other programs, and this converter, read. The result shows the design exactly as it was last saved, with blend modes and effects already applied, but without separate layers. A standard PSD can be up to 30,000 px on each side; bigger canvases need the PSB format, which this page does not accept.

Color travels with the file when an ICC profile is embedded. Photoshop embeds one by default, and the profile is used when colors are prepared for the PDF, so an Adobe RGB photo does not turn dull. Strip metadata, on by default here, leaves camera and GPS data out of the PDF. If the proof comes out heavier than an email allows, our notes on compressing a PDF without losing quality cover the options.

PSD

Adobe Photoshop Document

PSD is Adobe Photoshop's native file format, in use since 1990. It stores layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, smart objects, channels and colour profiles so a design can be re-edited later without loss. Files are often very large, and full fidelity requires Photoshop; other editors such as GIMP, Photopea and Affinity open PSDs with varying accuracy. Browsers, phones and most upload forms cannot display PSD directly.

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

A PSD is a working file full of layers that only Photoshop and a few editors render correctly, so designers flatten it into a PDF proof for clients and printers; PDF to PSD runs the other way, bringing a page back into Photoshop to edit.

Prepare a PSD before converting it to PDF

  1. Save with compatibility on

In Preferences > File Handling, set Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility to Always, then save. Without it, other programs may find no composite to show.

  2. Hide what the client should not see

Guides and grids are never exported, but hidden layers can return if you forget to switch them off before saving. Check the Layers panel once.

  3. Check the resolution

With Actual size, a 72 ppi canvas becomes a very large page. Use Image > Image Size to set 300 ppi for print, or choose A4 or Letter under Page size.

PSD to PDF questions

Do I need Photoshop installed to make a PDF from a PSD?

No. Upload the file here and convert it; there is nothing to install. You only need Photoshop when the layers themselves must stay editable in the PDF, which is a Photoshop PDF feature.

Will the layers still be separate in the PDF?

No, every visible layer is merged into one flat image, exactly as the canvas looked when it was saved. Hidden layers are left out. Keep the original PSD as your editable master.

Why does my PDF look different from what Photoshop shows?

The usual cause is a PSD saved with Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility turned off, so the file holds no merged preview for other programs to use. Open it in Photoshop, turn that preference on under File Handling, and save again.

What happens to a CMYK or 16-bit PSD?

The picture is prepared for screen viewing: 16 bits per channel are reduced to 8 and CMYK colors are converted using the embedded color profile where one exists. For press work, export a PDF/X file from Photoshop so the printer keeps your CMYK values.

Can I send a PSD mockup to a client who has no Adobe apps?

That is the most common reason for this page. A PDF opens in any browser, on a phone or in Preview on a Mac, and the client can add comments in a free PDF reader.

The PSD is 400 MB. What can I do?

Uploads are limited to 95 MB per file. In Photoshop, use Layer > Flatten Image on a copy, or make a JPG of the canvas with PSD to JPG and convert that instead; the page looks the same.
