WebP to PDF Converter

Images you save from a website often arrive as .webp, a format that opens in a browser but not in many print dialogs, form portals or older office apps. Put them on PDF pages and they open anywhere.

Page size starts at Same as image, so each page is exactly as big as its picture. Choose A4 or Letter if someone is going to print the PDF.

  3. 3

    Convert and save

Press Convert to PDF. You get one PDF with a page per image, or separate PDFs in a ZIP when Output is set to One PDF per image.

Answer

How do I convert WebP to PDF?

Upload the .webp images, set the page size, press Convert to PDF and download. Each WebP is re-encoded into a format every PDF reader can display.

Convert WebP to PDF when a page will not accept web images

Google announced WebP in 2010, building it on the VP8 video codec so that web pages would load faster. It worked: most large sites now send WebP to any browser that asks for it. Safari was the last major browser to join, with Safari 14 in 2020. The catch is that the format stayed a web format. Right-click a product photo, a chart or a scanned notice on a site and the file you keep is .webp, even if the page looked like it showed a JPG.

Outside the browser the support is patchy. Upload forms that list JPG, PNG and PDF reject it, some printer drivers and photo kiosks do not recognize it, and older office suites cannot insert it. PDF fixes all of that because the picture is stored the way PDF expects and any reader opens it.

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010 to make web pages load faster. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation in a single format. Lossy WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEGs of similar visual quality, and lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG. Every current browser supports it, but some older desktop software, print services and upload forms still reject it. Windows, macOS and most modern image editors can open WebP files.

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

WebP pages are meant for websites, so a downloaded product photo, recipe image or infographic has to become a PDF before it can be printed, attached to a form or filed; PDF to WebP is the opposite trip, preparing a page for a web page.

WebP to PDF converter myths

MythRenaming photo.webp to photo.pdf makes it a PDF.

FactThe bytes inside are still WebP, and a PDF reader reports the file as damaged. The image has to be placed on a real PDF page.

MythRe-encoding a WebP always makes it look worse.

FactAt Image quality 88, the default here, photos look the same at normal zoom. Loss shows up mainly when a file is squeezed hard to meet a size limit.

MythA PDF made from WebP will be much bigger than the WebP files.

FactExpect some growth, because JPEG is usually less efficient than WebP at the same quality. A target size under PDF file size keeps it in check.

Lossy WebP photos are stored as JPEG at the Image quality you choose. Lossless WebP graphics, such as logos and flat diagrams, lose nothing visible at the default, though fine colored edges can show slight softening at low quality settings. If you gather a set of website images, set Page order to File name so the pages follow the numbers in their names.

For pictures from newer sites that serve AVIF instead, AVIF to PDF does the same job. And if you are curious why sites keep switching formats, our explainer on AVIF, HEIC and WebP compares the three.

WebP to PDF questions

Why do images I save from websites end up as WebP?

Many sites serve WebP because it is smaller than JPEG or PNG at similar quality, and the browser saves the file in the format it received. The site, not your computer, chose the format. Saving the same picture again will give WebP again.

Can a PDF hold a WebP image directly?

No. The PDF specification lists a fixed set of image compressions, such as JPEG, JPEG 2000 and Flate, and WebP is not one of them. Every WebP is therefore decoded and stored again in a format PDF readers understand, which is why the result opens in any viewer.

Does a WebP with a transparent background stay transparent in the PDF?

The see-through areas show the page beneath them, which is white. On screen and on paper the image looks like it sits on white, the same way a transparent PNG would.

Does an animated WebP become a multi-page PDF?

A PDF page is static, so the page shows a single still picture of the animation. If the motion matters, turn the file into a GIF or MP4 instead and share that next to the PDF.

Is it better to convert WebP to JPG first and then make the PDF?

There is no need; that adds a second round of compression. Upload the WebP files here and they are encoded once. Convert to JPG only when you also need loose image files, using WebP to JPG.

How do I keep the WebP to PDF file small enough to email?

Set PDF file size to Target size and type a limit such as 2 MB. The pictures are recompressed and, if needed, scaled down until the whole document fits. Screenshots of text stay readable at about 150 KB per page.
