Turning a set of photos into a printable PDF album
A folder of photos is hard to hand to someone. It arrives as dozens of attachments in a random order, the recipient's phone shows them one at a time, and a print shop asks you to pick sizes for each. A single PDF fixes all three: the pages are in your order, it opens in any browser, and a home printer or a copy shop can print the whole thing in one job.
The common uses are personal and practical at once: a holiday album for grandparents who do not use cloud galleries, a year of a child's drawings photographed flat on a table, before-and-after photos of a renovation for an insurance claim. Each of these benefits from photos sorted by the date they were taken, which is why this page starts with that order.
If you are digitizing paperwork rather than pictures, the guide on how to scan documents to PDF covers lighting and cropping for pages.

Portable Document Format
PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

People turn photos into a PDF to share or print a set as one ordered album instead of dozens of loose files; going from PDF to photos is about getting individual images back out.
Will the photos look sharp when the PDF is printed?
Print quality depends on how many pixels land on each inch of paper. Photo labs commonly work at 300 pixels per inch. A 12-megapixel phone photo is 4032 × 3024 px, which at 300 per inch covers about 13.4 × 10 in, more than a full A4 or Letter sheet. Half a page, as in the default two-per-page layout, leaves plenty of headroom, so phone and camera photos print sharp.
Photos saved from messaging apps or social media are a different story. They are often reduced to about 1600 px on the long side, which at 300 per inch prints well up to around 5 × 4 in. Keep those to two or four per page.
Album settings worth checking
- Fit keeps every photo whole; Fill page trims edges for a borderless look.
- Medium margin is 10 mm, enough for most home printers to avoid clipping.
- Auto orientation turns pages for landscape shots; Portrait keeps a bound album uniform.
- Date taken order works for camera and phone photos, not for screenshots.
- A target file size keeps a large album small enough for email.
Photo to PDF questions
How many photos fit on one PDF page?
One, two or four, set under Images per page. This page starts at two, which gives each photo roughly half an A4 sheet, close to the size of a standard 5 × 7 in print. Four per page makes a contact sheet.
Will my photos be printed in the order they were taken?
Yes, Page order is set to Date taken, which reads the capture date stored by the camera or phone. Photos without that date, such as screenshots or images from messaging apps, follow by upload order, so choose As added and drag them if the order matters.
Are photos cropped to fill the page?
Not with the default Fit setting, which shows each whole photo with white space where the shapes differ. Fill page covers the slot edge to edge and trims what does not fit, which looks more like a printed album but can cut off heads at the top of a portrait shot.
Will the PDF be too big to email?
An album of 50 full-resolution phone photos can easily run past 100 MB. Set PDF file size to Target size and enter around 20 MB for most email services, or use compress PDF afterwards. The image to PDF under 1 MB preset is set for very strict limits.
Do landscape photos get landscape pages?
With Orientation on Auto, each page turns to suit its photos, so a landscape shot gets a landscape page when it is alone on it. Choose Portrait to keep every page upright for a bound album.
Is my location data included in the PDF?
No. Strip metadata is on by default and removes the GPS position and camera details from every photo before it goes into the PDF, which matters when you share an album of your home or your children publicly.
