How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Choose the .avif files

Select one AVIF or up to 50 at once, 95 MB each. They show as thumbnails; drag to set the page order.

  2. 2

    Check the page layout

Pages start at A4 with a 5 mm margin, oriented to each image. Choose Same as image under Page size if the PDF is only for screens.

  3. 3

    Convert to PDF

Press Convert to PDF. Each AVIF is decoded and stored as a high-quality JPEG on its own page, then the document downloads.

Why AVIF images need converting before they go into a PDF

AVIF is an AV1 video frame stored in a HEIF container. That design gives it small files, transparency, HDR and animation, and it is the reason browsers adopted it quickly while document software did not. Browsers already ship an AV1 video decoder; a PDF editor or a print driver does not. On Windows, even the Photos app needs the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store before it shows .avif files.

A PDF cannot help here either, because the format only knows a short list of image encodings. Converting means decoding the AV1 data once and storing the pixels as JPEG, which every PDF reader since the 1990s understands. At Image quality 90 the difference from the original is hard to see, although the page will usually weigh more than the AVIF did, since AVIF typically needs fewer bytes than JPEG for the same picture.

AVIF

AV1 Image File Format

AVIF stores still images and image sequences compressed with the AV1 video codec, and was finalised by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019. It usually produces smaller files than both JPEG and WebP at the same visual quality and supports transparency, animation, wide colour gamut and HDR. Encoding is slower than older formats, and very fine textures can look smoothed at low quality settings. All major browsers now display AVIF, but many desktop apps, social platforms and older devices cannot open it.

PDF

Portable Document Format

PDF was created by Adobe in 1993 and became the open ISO 32000 standard in 2008. It fixes text, fonts, images and layout so a document looks the same on every screen and printer. PDFs can contain forms, signatures, links, attachments and searchable text, and the PDF/A variant is used for long-term archiving. The fixed layout makes PDFs hard to edit, and scanned PDFs contain only images unless OCR is applied. Every browser and operating system can open them.

AVIF files arrive from websites and photo apps that favor small downloads, but office software, print shops and forms expect documents, so the images are put on PDF pages to be printed, signed or attached.

Turning a folder of AVIF downloads into one document

Saved product images, recipe photos and infographics often arrive with long hashed file names, so sort them deliberately: drag the thumbnails, or rename the files first and set Page order to File name. Wide banners look best on landscape pages, which Orientation on Auto picks for you.

If a site sent WebP rather than AVIF, the same steps work on the WebP to PDF page. For the reasons sites pick one format or the other, see AVIF, HEIC and WebP explained.

AVIF to PDF questions

Why did my browser save the image as .avif?

The site served it that way. Many sites and image CDNs send AVIF to browsers that can display it, because it is usually smaller than JPEG at the same look. When you choose Save image as, the browser writes the file it received, not a JPG.

Can a PDF contain an AVIF image directly?

No. The PDF standard defines a fixed set of image compression filters, including JPEG, JPEG 2000, Flate and JBIG2, and AV1 is not one of them. Every AVIF therefore has to be decoded and re-encoded, which is what this converter does.

Do HDR AVIF photos keep their brightness in the PDF?

No. AVIF can store 10- or 12-bit high dynamic range images, while the JPEG data inside the PDF is 8-bit standard range. Highlights are mapped into normal range, so an HDR shot looks like an ordinary photo on the page.

What happens to an animated AVIF?

A PDF page cannot play an animation, so the result is a still image. If you need the motion, convert the file to a GIF or a video instead of a document.

Should I convert AVIF to JPG instead?

If the receiver wants an image file, yes: AVIF to JPG keeps it a picture that any gallery app opens. Choose PDF when the images belong in one document, such as a set of product sheets or a printed handout.
