GIF to MOV Converter
Convert an animated GIF into a QuickTime MOV clip with a steady frame rate, so a Mac video editor plays every frame instead of importing the first one as a still picture.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Lower is better quality and a bigger file. 18 looks identical to the source, 23 is the default, 28 and above shows visible softening.
Frames per second. Keep the source rate unless a platform asks for a specific one; 15–20 fps is plenty for GIFs.
Only used for PowerPoint files and single still images: how long each slide or picture stays on screen.
Auto uses AAC for MP4/MOV and Opus for WebM. Copy keeps the original sound untouched when the new format supports it.
192 kbps is transparent for music; 128 kbps is enough for speech.
Width of the animation in pixels; height follows the aspect ratio. 480 px suits chats, 720 px or more gives a high-quality GIF but a much larger file.
GIF holds at most 256 colors. Fewer colors make a smaller file but cause banding on gradients and skin tones.
Mixes palette colors in a fine pattern to hide banding. Sierra gives the smoothest result; none gives the smallest file.
Whether the animation repeats endlessly or plays one time and stops.
Optional. Seconds (e.g. 75) or minutes:seconds (1:15). Leave empty to start at the beginning.
Optional. Same format as the start time. Leave empty to keep everything up to the end.
The converted file will be at or just under this size.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the GIFs
Add up to 20 animated .gif files, 95 MB or less each. Reaction GIFs, stickers and screen-recorded GIFs all work.
- 2
Keep the timeline settings
Convert to MOV, Video codec H.264, Frame rate 30 fps and Quality (CRF) 18 suit an editing timeline. Choose 24 or 25 fps if your project uses that rate.
- 3
Convert and drop into the project
Press Convert to MOV, download the clips and import them into iMovie, Final Cut Pro or Keynote. Files we receive are deleted after 30 minutes.
Convert GIF to MOV when the animation has to sit on a video timeline; for sharing in chats, an MP4 or the GIF itself travels better.
How a GIF becomes a MOV clip
GIF frames and delays
Each frame is a 256-color picture with its own delay in hundredths of a second.
Constant 30 fps
Frames are repeated to match their delays, so timing survives on a fixed frame rate.
H.264 MOV
Full-color video with a real duration that iMovie and Final Cut Pro read as a clip.
The format is older than most video codecs. CompuServe released GIF in 1987, the GIF89a revision of 1989 added per-frame delays and transparency, and Netscape Navigator 2.0 made looping animation popular in 1995 with its application extension. None of that was designed for editing software, which is why GIFs behave like odd images in Apple's apps.
Moving a GIF into a MOV is mostly about editors: inserting a meme into a YouTube cut, a sticker into a family video, or a UI animation into a product demo in Final Cut Pro. For posting to social apps instead, the GIF to MP4 converter is the better fit.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format
GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

MOV
QuickTime movie
MOV is the QuickTime container format created by Apple in 1991. iPhones record MOV files, and professional editing tools use it for high-quality codecs such as Apple ProRes, including versions with transparency. It can hold multiple video, audio, timecode and subtitle tracks. MOV files from editing software can be very large, and some Windows apps, Android phones and websites play them poorly or not at all.

GIF goes to MOV to become editable footage: Apple's editors and QuickTime treat a GIF as a picture, while a MOV with a constant frame rate drops onto a timeline as a real clip.

Transparent areas become solid
GIF transparency is one on/off palette entry, and H.264 video has no alpha channel, so see-through parts of a sticker get a solid fill in the MOV. To keep a cutout over your footage, ask the creator for a ProRes 4444 or HEVC-with-alpha version, which Final Cut Pro layers over footage.
GIF to MOV questions
Why does iMovie show my GIF as a still picture?
iMovie handles a .gif as an image file, so it places the first frame on the timeline for a few seconds like a photo. As a MOV, the same animation is a video clip with a real duration and every frame intact.
How do I make the MOV repeat in iMovie or QuickTime?
A MOV plays once and stops. In QuickTime Player choose View > Loop; in iMovie or Final Cut Pro copy and paste the clip several times on the timeline. The Loop option on this page only applies when the output is an animated image such as GIF or WebP.
Why is Frame rate set to 30 fps for a GIF?
A GIF stores a separate delay for every frame, often irregular, while editors expect one constant rate. Converting to 30 fps repeats frames where needed so the motion keeps its original timing on a 30 fps timeline.
Can I turn a GIF into a Live Photo with this MOV?
Not directly. A Live Photo is a still image and a MOV paired by a shared identifier, which this converter does not write. The MOV it makes is a regular clip you can share, edit or set to loop.
Does a 256-color GIF look better once it is a MOV?
No, colors that the GIF palette already merged cannot come back, so banding and dither dots stay. What improves is playback: the MOV scrubs smoothly in an editor. If you still have the source video, a fresh GIF made with care looks better; see how to make a GIF from a video.
