MOV to AVI Converter
Convert MOV videos, most often iPhone clips in HEVC, into AVI files that a DivX DVD player, an older TV or a car head unit reads from a USB stick.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Lower is better quality and a bigger file. 18 looks identical to the source, 23 is the default, 28 and above shows visible softening.
Frames per second. Keep the source rate unless a platform asks for a specific one; 15–20 fps is plenty for GIFs.
Only used for PowerPoint files and single still images: how long each slide or picture stays on screen.
Auto uses AAC for MP4/MOV and Opus for WebM. Copy keeps the original sound untouched when the new format supports it.
192 kbps is transparent for music; 128 kbps is enough for speech.
Width of the animation in pixels; height follows the aspect ratio. 480 px suits chats, 720 px or more gives a high-quality GIF but a much larger file.
GIF holds at most 256 colors. Fewer colors make a smaller file but cause banding on gradients and skin tones.
Mixes palette colors in a fine pattern to hide banding. Sierra gives the smoothest result; none gives the smallest file.
Whether the animation repeats endlessly or plays one time and stops.
Optional. Seconds (e.g. 75) or minutes:seconds (1:15). Leave empty to start at the beginning.
Optional. Same format as the start time. Leave empty to keep everything up to the end.
The converted file will be at or just under this size.
How to use this tool
- 1
Pick the MOV clips
Upload up to 20 .mov files of 95 MB or less each. A minute of 4K iPhone video is typically larger, so trim it on the phone first.
- 2
Use the player profile
Resolution 480p, Frame rate 30 fps and Audio codec MP3 at 128 kbps match what DivX-era players decode. Choose 720p if the TV's manual lists HD AVI.
- 3
Convert and test one
Press Convert to AVI, copy one file to the stick and try it on the device before converting a whole holiday. Uploads are deleted after 30 minutes.
iPhone MOV clips on a TV that only reads AVI
Apple's QuickTime format dates from 1991, but the MOV files people struggle with today come from iPhones: HEVC video since iOS 11, Dolby Vision HDR on iPhone 12 and later, and often 60 fps. Each of those is a feature an older TV's chip cannot decode, so the screen shows an error or a blank thumbnail.
AVI with MPEG-4 Part 2 video is the lowest common denominator for that hardware. The preset converts down to it on purpose: standard definition, a constant frame rate and MP3 sound. If the device also lists MP4 in its manual, an MP4 is the better choice, and MP4 to AVI covers clips that already left the phone as MP4.

MOV
QuickTime movie
MOV is the QuickTime container format created by Apple in 1991. iPhones record MOV files, and professional editing tools use it for high-quality codecs such as Apple ProRes, including versions with transparency. It can hold multiple video, audio, timecode and subtitle tracks. MOV files from editing software can be very large, and some Windows apps, Android phones and websites play them poorly or not at all.

AVI
Audio Video Interleave
AVI is a multimedia container introduced by Microsoft in 1992 as part of Video for Windows. It can hold many codecs, from uncompressed video to DivX and Xvid, which made it a common format for camcorders and downloaded films in the 2000s. It lacks modern features such as reliable variable frame rates and standard subtitle support, and files are often large. Desktop players such as VLC play AVI, but phones and browsers usually cannot.

MOV goes to AVI when a phone video has to play on hardware from before HEVC: the player understands DivX-style AVI from a USB stick and nothing Apple has recorded in years.
MOV to AVI playback problems and fixes
The player lists the file but says the format is unsupported
Lower Resolution to 480p if you changed it, and confirm the manual mentions DivX or Xvid. Some players read AVI only with these codecs.
Colors look dull or grey compared with the phone
The clip was recorded in HDR, which AVI cannot signal. Turn off HDR Video under Settings > Camera > Record Video for clips meant for old screens.
Sound slowly drifts away from the picture
Keep Frame rate at 30 fps; variable-rate phone video converted at its source rate can drift on players with weak clocks.
The file name shows as garbled characters
Rename files with plain letters and numbers before copying. Many older players cannot render emoji or accents.
Sound settings for an AVI from a phone video
iPhones record AAC sound, which many DivX-certified players cannot decode inside AVI, so the preset switches to MP3 at 128 kbps. That is plenty for voices and room sound from a phone microphone; raise Audio bitrate to 192 kbps for a concert clip. Want only the soundtrack? Our guide on how to convert MP4 to MP3 works for MOV files too.
MOV to AVI questions
Why does my TV show iPhone videos as unsupported but plays old AVI movies?
Since iOS 11 the Camera app records in HEVC when Formats is set to High Efficiency, and TVs from before roughly 2016 have no HEVC decoder. They also may not open the QuickTime container at all, while AVI with DivX-style video is exactly what their firmware was certified for.
Why is the frame rate fixed at 30 fps here?
iPhones can record at 60 fps and adjust the rate slightly during a clip. DivX player profiles top out at 30 fps for standard definition, so a constant 30 fps avoids stutter and audio drift on that hardware.
Will the vertical iPhone video fill the TV screen?
No. A portrait clip keeps its shape, so a 16:9 TV shows it as a narrow strip with black bars on both sides. Film sideways in landscape when the video is meant for a TV.
What happens to the location and date stored in the MOV?
The MOV keeps creation date, GPS position and camera model in QuickTime metadata. AVI has no equivalent fields, so the converted file only carries a new file date; keep the original if you sort videos by place.
Can I record iPhone videos that skip this step?
Partly. Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible records H.264 instead of HEVC, which more old TVs accept inside an MP4 or MOV. Players that only read AVI still need the conversion.
Is MOV to AVI lossless?
No, the clip is re-encoded and, at the 480p default, scaled down. On a TV across the room the difference from the original is small; for editing or archiving keep the MOV, or use the MOV to MP4 converter for a modern copy.
