VOB to MP4 Converter

VOB files are the video pieces of a DVD: MPEG-2 pictures with Dolby Digital sound, cut into chunks of about 1 GB. Converted to MP4, a home DVD clip plays on phones, laptops and smart TVs without a disc drive.

How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Pick the VOB files

Open the disc's VIDEO_TS folder and add the VTS_ files you need. Each file can be up to 95 MB, 20 files per batch.

  2. 2

    Keep the defaults

The page converts to H.264 at Quality (CRF) 20 with AAC stereo at 192 kbps, which keeps DVD detail intact.

  3. 3

    Convert and download

Press Convert to MP4. Every VOB comes back as a separate MP4 in the same order as its file name.

Upload the VTS_ files from a home DVD, press Convert to MP4, and each one comes back as an H.264 video with AAC stereo sound.

What is inside a DVD's VIDEO_TS folder

The DVD-Video standard was published in 1996 and every disc follows the same layout: a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO and BUP navigation files and VOB (Video Object) files that hold the picture and sound. A VOB is an MPEG-2 program stream, usually with Dolby Digital AC-3 audio, sometimes MPEG audio or uncompressed PCM, plus subtitle bitmaps and menu buttons.

Discs split each title into chunks of at most 1 GB, so a one-hour recording appears as VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and onward. The picture is interlaced: two half-frames per frame at 59.94 fields per second in NTSC regions and 50 in PAL regions, which is why fast motion can show thin comb lines on a computer screen.

VOB

DVD Video Object

VOB files hold the video, audio, subtitles and menus on a DVD-Video disc, defined by the DVD Forum in 1996. They contain MPEG-2 video in an MPEG program stream, usually split into 1 GB parts in a VIDEO_TS folder. VOB files can be played by VLC and DVD software, but phones, browsers and editors generally cannot use them. Copy-protected discs cannot be converted without decryption.

MP4

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

VOB goes to MP4 to rescue home DVDs: the disc player is gone or the laptop has no drive, and the family video needs to live as a file that any device opens.

Most VOB files are larger than the upload limit

Each file can be up to 95 MB here, while a full VOB chunk is close to 1 GB. At typical DVD bitrates 95 MB holds about two to three minutes of video, so this page suits short VOB files, menu loops and clips you have already cut; a full disc needs desktop software.

Convert VOB to MP4 without losing the order

Copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the disc to your computer first; reading straight from an aging DVD-R often stalls on scratches. Then add the VTS_ files of the title you want and keep their names, because the number at the end is the playback order. Skip the _0 files unless you want the menu.

The MP4 keeps the disc's frame size and shows it at the right shape: a 720 × 480 frame flagged 16:9 plays as widescreen instead of looking squeezed. Leave Resolution on Same as source; scaling a DVD up only adds bytes. For other legacy formats, MPEG to MP4 handles stand-alone MPEG-2 files, and the video converter lists every source the tool reads.

VOB to MP4 questions

Which VOB file in VIDEO_TS holds the actual video?

The files named VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB and so on carry title 1, in playback order. VIDEO_TS.VOB and every VTS_xx_0.VOB file contain menus, usually a short loop with buttons. The IFO and BUP files are navigation data and cannot be converted.

Can I turn a whole DVD into one MP4 here?

No. This tool converts each VOB into its own MP4 and does not join them. Convert the parts in order, then put them on one timeline in an editor such as iMovie, Clipchamp or Shotcut and export a single file.

Why do some players show VOB video with no sound?

DVD audio is usually Dolby Digital (AC-3), and many phone and browser players have no AC-3 decoder. The converter rewrites the sound as AAC stereo, which every MP4 player supports.

Will the MP4 look sharper than the DVD?

No. A DVD frame is 720 × 480 pixels in NTSC regions and 720 × 576 in PAL regions, and the converter never upscales. Expect the same detail as the disc, shown correctly at 4:3 or 16:9 on a modern screen.

Can I convert VOB files copied from a store-bought movie DVD?

Commercial movie discs are encrypted with CSS, and this converter does not remove copy protection. It works on VOB files that are not encrypted, such as discs made with a camcorder, a DVD recorder or burning software.

How much space does a converted DVD clip need?

Less than the VOB. DVD video runs at roughly 4–8 Mbps of MPEG-2, while H.264 at CRF 20 typically needs about half that for the same picture, so an MP4 is commonly 40–60% of the VOB's size.
