MP4 to WebP Converter

An animated WebP plays like a GIF, silently and on a loop, but keeps millions of colors and usually weighs far less. Cut a few seconds out of an MP4 and turn them into one here.

Answer

Can an MP4 become an animated WebP?

Yes. The video's frames are resampled to the Width and Frame rate you pick and written as one looping WebP image, without sound. 480 px at 15 fps suits most pages and chats.

Why turn a video into an animated WebP

A video tag needs controls, autoplay rules and a muted attribute before a browser will start it on its own, and some page builders, store listing editors and markdown files only accept images. An animated WebP slots into any place that takes a picture and starts moving the moment it loads.

Compared with a GIF, WebP keeps full 24-bit color with an 8-bit alpha channel and uses compression from the VP8 video codec, so gradients, skin tones and shadows stay smooth. Compared with an MP4, it is less efficient for anything longer than a few seconds, which is why it suits short loops rather than whole clips.

MP4 to WebP width and file weight

  1. 240 px

    Thumbnails and emoji-sized loops.

  2. 360 px

    Chat replies and narrow sidebars.

  3. 480 px

This page's default, a blog or docs column.

  4. 720 px

Product demos where small text must stay legible.

  5. 1280 px

Full-width hero loops; expect a heavy file.

MP4

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

WEBP

WebP image

WebP is an image format released by Google in 2010 to make web pages load faster. It supports both lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency and animation in a single format. Lossy WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPEGs of similar visual quality, and lossless WebP is usually smaller than PNG. Every current browser supports it, but some older desktop software, print services and upload forms still reject it. Windows, macOS and most modern image editors can open WebP files.

MP4 becomes animated WebP when a short clip has to autoplay and loop inside a web page, a store listing or a sticker without the weight and color loss of a GIF.

This page

Animated WebP

Image that loops on its own.

  • Millions of colors and soft transparency
  • Works where only images are allowed
  • No sound
Best for: Short loops on web pages and in listings.
Oldest

Animated GIF

The format every app understands.

  • 256 colors per frame
  • Heaviest of the three
  • Plays in email clients
Best for: Email and old forums.
Longest

MP4 video

Real video with a timeline.

  • Smallest for long clips
  • Keeps sound
  • Needs a video player or tag
Best for: Anything over about ten seconds.

Keeping the animated WebP light

Three settings decide the weight: length, width and frame rate, in that order. Halving the clip length halves the file; dropping from 720 px to 480 px cuts it by roughly half again; going from 30 fps to 15 fps saves a third or more while motion still reads as smooth for most screen captures and reactions.

If a page builder caps uploads, tick Limit file size and type the maximum, and the converter lowers quality until the image fits. Need several clips at once, from any source format? The video converter handles MOV, MKV and WebM the same way.

MP4 to WebP converter questions

Does an MP4 to WebP conversion keep the sound?

No. Animated WebP is an image format with no audio track, so the sound is dropped. If the sound matters, keep a video: MP4 to WebM gives a small web video that still has audio.

How long can an animated WebP be?

The format has no practical length limit, but every extra second adds weight that a browser has to download before the loop feels smooth. Two to six seconds is the usual range for a banner, a product demo or a reaction loop; trim with Start at and End at.

Which width should I pick for an animated WebP?

Match the box it will be shown in. A chat or a blog column rarely needs more than 480 px; a full-width hero animation can go to 960 or 1280 px, at a much larger file. Height follows the video's aspect ratio.

Will the animated WebP play in every browser?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all play it. Firefox added support in version 65 (2019) and Safari in version 14 (2020), so only browsers older than that show a broken image.

Can WordPress use an animated WebP?

WordPress accepts WebP uploads since version 5.8 (2021). The media library may not show the animation in its thumbnail, but the full-size image on the page plays as long as no plugin re-compresses it into a still.

How is this different from converting MP4 to GIF?

GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame and compresses poorly, so a clip of the same width is usually several times heavier. Choose GIF only when the destination will not take WebP, such as many email clients; MP4 to GIF covers that.
