How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the SWF files

Drop up to 20 .swf files, each 95 MB or less. Flash files are usually tiny, so the size limit rarely matters here.

  2. 2

    Keep the MP4 settings

Convert to is set to MP4 with Video codec H.264 and Audio codec AAC, the pairing every phone and browser decodes. Raise Frame rate only if the animation looks choppy.

  3. 3

    Convert and check the start

Press Convert to MP4 and play the first seconds of the result. Our copies of your files are deleted after 30 minutes.

Answer

How do I convert SWF to MP4?

Upload the .swf, leave Convert to on MP4 with H.264, and press Convert to MP4. Files that hold a video stream or frame-by-frame animation convert directly; scripted or interactive Flash content needs to be screen-recorded in an emulator first.

Why SWF files stopped playing after 2020

  1. 1996

    FutureSplash becomes Flash

Macromedia buys FutureWave and renames FutureSplash Animator to Macromedia Flash; its player reads .swf files.

  2. 2005

    Adobe takes over

Adobe completes its purchase of Macromedia, and Flash Player becomes an Adobe product.

  3. 2010

    No Flash on iPhone

Steve Jobs publishes "Thoughts on Flash", explaining why iOS will not run it. SWF never plays on an iPhone or iPad.

  4. 2017

    End of life announced

Adobe announces it will stop updating and distributing Flash Player at the end of 2020.

  5. 2021

    Content blocked

From January 12, 2021, Flash Player itself refuses to run SWF content, and browsers have removed the plugin.

That timeline left a lot of work stranded: school animation projects, Newgrounds-era cartoons, website intros, product demos and corporate e-learning modules exported from Flash or Adobe Captivate. The files still sit on old drives and backup discs, and double-clicking them now does nothing useful.

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound is the opposite of Flash: no plugin, no script engine, and support in every phone, browser, TV and editor. Once the animation is a video you can trim it, post it, or turn a short loop into a GIF with the MP4 to GIF converter.

What converts from an SWF file and what does not

SWF

Shockwave Flash (SWF)

SWF is the compiled file format of Adobe Flash, originally created by FutureWave and Macromedia in 1996. It contains vector animation, bitmaps, sound, video and ActionScript code, so it can be an animation, a game or an interactive app. Browsers dropped Flash Player at the end of 2020, so SWF files no longer play on the web. Emulators such as Ruffle and standalone players can still run many of them.

MP4

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

SWF goes to MP4 as a rescue: Flash-era cartoons, banners and training clips stopped running in browsers in 2021, and a video file is the only form that plays on anything made today.

DoDon't
Convert SWF files that wrap a video, such as exported Flash Video players and video intros.Expect games, quizzes or menus to stay clickable in the video.
Convert frame-by-frame animations and cartoons that play straight through without clicks.Expect sounds triggered by buttons or scripts to appear in the soundtrack.
Keep Frame rate on Same as source so the timing matches the original.Convert a tiny loader .swf that only fetches the real movie from a website that no longer exists.
Keep the original .swf in your archive; the MP4 is a viewing copy.Upscale a 550 × 400 px Flash stage and expect HD detail; converted video is never upscaled.

SWF to MP4 questions

Can I still open an SWF file without Flash Player?

Yes, through emulators. Ruffle, an open-source Flash Player emulator written in Rust, runs in a browser extension or as a desktop app, and the Internet Archive uses it to play its Flash collection. An emulator plays the file; converting it gives you a video you can keep, share and edit.

Why is my converted SWF video black or frozen on one frame?

The SWF builds its picture at playback time from vector shapes and ActionScript, and a video converter only reads frames and video streams stored in the file. Play the SWF in Ruffle, capture it with a screen recorder, and convert that recording instead.

Can an interactive Flash game become an MP4?

Only as a recording of someone playing it. A video has one fixed timeline, so buttons, menus and score logic cannot survive. Record a play-through in an emulator if you want to keep a memory of the game.

Why is the MP4 bigger than the tiny SWF?

Flash stores shapes as math, so a two-minute cartoon can fit in a few hundred kilobytes. MP4 stores every frame as pixels, which typically makes the file several times larger. Lower Resolution to 720p, raise Quality (CRF) to 26, or run the result through compress video if size matters.

Does the background music from the Flash animation come through?

Sound that the SWF stores as a stream along its timeline is encoded to AAC with the video. Sounds that play only on a click or a script event belong to the interactive layer and will be missing.

Which frame rate will the MP4 use?

With Frame rate on Same as source, the MP4 keeps the rate written in the SWF header. Many Flash animations were authored at 12 or 24 fps, which looks normal; pick 30 fps only if a platform demands it.
