How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Add the AVI files

Select up to 20 clips, 95 MB maximum each. Files from cameras are usually small enough as they are.

  2. 2

    Check the quality setting

Quality (CRF) starts at 20, a little finer than usual, because old footage is already soft and does not need further loss. Resolution stays at the source size; videos are never upscaled.

  3. 3

    Convert to MP4

Press Convert to MP4 and save the files. We delete uploads and results 30 minutes after processing.

AVI is a 1992 Windows format. MP4 is what every device made since then actually plays. Converting keeps the picture and makes the file smaller.

Where your AVI files came from

Microsoft introduced Audio Video Interleave in November 1992 with Video for Windows. It is built on RIFF, the same chunk structure used by WAV audio, and it simply interleaves audio and video frames. That simplicity made it the default for a decade: point-and-shoot cameras from the 2000s recorded Motion JPEG AVI, MiniDV tapes were captured to DV AVI, and DivX and Xvid releases filled hard drives with it.

The design shows its age. The original specification capped files at about 2 GB until the OpenDML extension of the mid-1990s, it has no standard way to store B-frames or variable frame rates, and browsers never played it. Converting to MP4 with H.264 and AAC moves those memories into a container that phones, smart TVs and web pages handle natively.

AVI

Audio Video Interleave

AVI is a multimedia container introduced by Microsoft in 1992 as part of Video for Windows. It can hold many codecs, from uncompressed video to DivX and Xvid, which made it a common format for camcorders and downloaded films in the 2000s. It lacks modern features such as reliable variable frame rates and standard subtitle support, and files are often large. Desktop players such as VLC play AVI, but phones and browsers usually cannot.

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

AVI to MP4 is a rescue conversion: old camera clips, DV captures and DivX files get moved into a format that current phones, browsers and TVs still decode.

Short camera clips sit far below 95 MB. A full DV tape capture does not, since DV runs at about 13 GB per hour; cut those into scenes on your computer first, or convert a chapter at a time. Old WMV files from the same era convert the same way on WMV to MP4.

Once you have the MP4, you can share it as is or shrink it further for email. The video compression guide explains the size caps of common mail and chat services.

Common beliefs about AVI, checked

MythAVI files are bigger, so they must be higher quality.

FactThe size comes from older codecs like Motion JPEG and DV that compress far less. The container says nothing about quality.

MythRenaming .avi to .mp4 converts it.

FactAVI uses RIFF chunks and MP4 uses ISO boxes. A renamed file is still AVI inside and most players refuse it.

MythConverting will repair a damaged AVI.

FactRe-encoding can rebuild a broken index so the file plays, but frames that are corrupt stay missing.

AVI to MP4 FAQ

Is this AVI to MP4 converter free?

Yes. There is no watermark, no sign-up and no daily quota. Each batch takes up to 20 files of up to 95 MB.

Why won't my AVI play on my iPhone or Mac?

Apple's players never supported the AVI container, and the codecs often found inside it, such as DivX, Xvid or Motion JPEG from old cameras, are not part of macOS or iOS either. MP4 with H.264 plays in the Photos app and QuickTime Player directly.

Will the MP4 be smaller than the AVI?

Usually much smaller. Motion JPEG and DV store every frame as a full picture, while H.264 encodes only what changes between frames. A camera clip often shrinks to a fraction of its original size at the same visible quality.

My camera AVI has the sound out of sync. Will converting help?

Often it does, because the converter rebuilds the timing while re-encoding. If the offset stays, it was recorded that way; trim the start with Start at to remove a few frames of silence.

Can I convert AVI to MP4 free on Windows without software?

Yes, that is what this page is for. It runs in Edge, Chrome or Firefox, so nothing is installed, and the converted MP4 opens in the Windows Photos app and Media Player.

What resolution will a converted DV tape capture have?

The same as the capture, typically 720 × 480 for NTSC or 720 × 576 for PAL. DV uses non-square pixels, and the MP4 keeps the 4:3 or 16:9 display shape so people do not look stretched.
