GIF to MP4 Converter
Convert animated GIFs into MP4 video. The animation looks the same or better, the file is usually many times smaller, and it uploads to places where a large GIF would be refused.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Lower is better quality and a bigger file. 18 looks identical to the source, 23 is the default, 28 and above shows visible softening.
Frames per second. Keep the source rate unless a platform asks for a specific one; 15–20 fps is plenty for GIFs.
Only used for PowerPoint files and single still images: how long each slide or picture stays on screen.
Auto uses AAC for MP4/MOV and Opus for WebM. Copy keeps the original sound untouched when the new format supports it.
192 kbps is transparent for music; 128 kbps is enough for speech.
Width of the animation in pixels; height follows the aspect ratio. 480 px suits chats, 720 px or more gives a high-quality GIF but a much larger file.
GIF holds at most 256 colors. Fewer colors make a smaller file but cause banding on gradients and skin tones.
Mixes palette colors in a fine pattern to hide banding. Sierra gives the smoothest result; none gives the smallest file.
Whether the animation repeats endlessly or plays one time and stops.
Optional. Seconds (e.g. 75) or minutes:seconds (1:15). Leave empty to start at the beginning.
Optional. Same format as the start time. Leave empty to keep everything up to the end.
The converted file will be at or just under this size.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload your GIFs
Add up to 20 animated GIFs, each up to 95 MB. Still GIFs work too and become a short clip.
- 2
Keep the defaults
H.264 video with no audio track is preset. Under Advanced settings you can set a Frame rate, a Resolution or Limit file size for a chat app.
- 3
Convert to MP4
Press Convert to MP4 and download the clips. Uploads are deleted after 30 minutes.

What Twitter, Discord and Imgur do with GIFs
Big platforms stopped serving real GIFs years ago. Twitter has converted uploaded GIFs to MP4 since 2014 and plays them as looping silent videos. Imgur introduced GIFV the same year, which is an MP4 or WebM wrapped in a page that loops it. Giphy and Tenor deliver MP4 or WebM to apps and keep the GIF only as a fallback. So when you upload an MP4 yourself, viewers see exactly what they would have seen anyway, minus the wait.
Discord is the place where size bites hardest. Free accounts can upload 10 MB per file, and a few seconds of high-resolution GIF easily goes past that. The same clip as MP4 usually fits with room to spare. If it still does not, turn on Limit file size and enter 10 MB, or see our walkthrough on compressing video for Discord and email.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format
GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

MPEG-4 video
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

GIF to MP4 is a size and smoothness conversion: the same animation in a modern video codec uploads faster, fits under chat limits and plays without the GIF palette's banding.
Convert GIF to video: what changes in the clip
Frame timing
GIF delays are stored in hundredths of a second per frame. They become a video frame rate, so stutters from uneven delays even out.
Dimensions
H.264 in 4:2:0 color needs even width and height, so an odd-sized GIF is adjusted by one pixel.
Looping
The loop flag does not carry over. Players and platforms decide whether a short silent clip repeats.
For tiny pixel-art GIFs, set Resolution to Same as source and leave the quality alone; scaling would blur hard edges. For reaction clips headed to a chat app, 480p or 360p is plenty. To go the other way and make a GIF from a video, read how to make a GIF from a video, which covers frame rate, width and palette settings.
GIF to MP4 questions
How do I convert a GIF to video that loops?
MP4 has no built-in loop flag the way GIF does. Looping is a player setting: web pages use the loop attribute on the video tag, and Twitter/X, Imgur and most chat apps loop short silent clips automatically. If you need a file that loops by itself everywhere, keep a GIF or use animated WebP.
Why is the MP4 so much smaller than the GIF?
GIF compresses each frame on its own with LZW and a 256-color palette. H.264 stores only what changes between frames and uses full color, so a typical animation shrinks by 80–95%. Long, noisy GIFs save the most.
Will colors look different after converting GIF to MP4?
They can look better, because dithering patterns from the 256-color palette smooth out. Very saturated reds may shift slightly, since H.264 stores color at half resolution in the common 4:2:0 format.
Does the GIF speed stay the same?
Yes, the frame timing is read from the GIF. One exception: GIFs saved with a 0 or 1 hundredth-of-a-second delay play at 10 fps in browsers, which clamp such delays. The MP4 follows the real timing, so it may look faster than the browser version did.
Can I add music to the converted clip?
Not here; GIFs have no sound and the converter outputs a silent MP4. Add audio in any video editor afterwards, or use the video converter if you already have a clip with sound.
What if a GIF has transparent areas?
H.264 has no transparency, so transparent pixels become a solid background. WebM can carry an alpha channel, so for a transparent animation on a website try GIF to WebM instead.
