MOV to WebM Converter
A MOV from an iPhone or a Mac is built around Apple's codecs, so it plays everywhere in Safari and unevenly elsewhere. A WebM copy uses royalty-free codecs that Chrome, Firefox and Edge decode natively, which makes it the version to embed on a site or upload to an open platform.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Lower is better quality and a bigger file. 18 looks identical to the source, 23 is the default, 28 and above shows visible softening.
Frames per second. Keep the source rate unless a platform asks for a specific one; 15–20 fps is plenty for GIFs.
Only used for PowerPoint files and single still images: how long each slide or picture stays on screen.
Auto uses AAC for MP4/MOV and Opus for WebM. Copy keeps the original sound untouched when the new format supports it.
192 kbps is transparent for music; 128 kbps is enough for speech.
Width of the animation in pixels; height follows the aspect ratio. 480 px suits chats, 720 px or more gives a high-quality GIF but a much larger file.
GIF holds at most 256 colors. Fewer colors make a smaller file but cause banding on gradients and skin tones.
Mixes palette colors in a fine pattern to hide banding. Sierra gives the smoothest result; none gives the smallest file.
Whether the animation repeats endlessly or plays one time and stops.
Optional. Seconds (e.g. 75) or minutes:seconds (1:15). Leave empty to start at the beginning.
Optional. Same format as the start time. Leave empty to keep everything up to the end.
The converted file will be at or just under this size.
How to use this tool
- 1
Upload the MOV
Drop iPhone clips, QuickTime screen recordings or exported MOVs, up to 20 files of 95 MB each.

Convert to WebM
Press Convert to WebM and upload the result to your site, CMS or platform.
Upload the MOV and press Convert to WebM. You get WebM video, built on Google's royalty-free codecs, with Opus sound that Chrome, Firefox and Edge play natively, usually far smaller than a ProRes export.
Why convert MOV to WebM
MOV dates from 1991, when Apple shipped QuickTime as the movie format for the Mac, and it still follows Apple's lead today: iPhone clips are usually HEVC, Final Cut Pro and Motion export ProRes, and QuickTime screen recordings use H.264. All of that is excellent inside the Apple world and a source of friction outside it.
WebM, released by Google in 2010, takes the opposite approach. It allows only a short list of open codecs, so a browser that supports WebM knows exactly what to expect. That predictability is why web developers, open-source projects and free-media archives favor it for anything embedded in a page.

MOV
QuickTime movie
MOV is the QuickTime container format created by Apple in 1991. iPhones record MOV files, and professional editing tools use it for high-quality codecs such as Apple ProRes, including versions with transparency. It can hold multiple video, audio, timecode and subtitle tracks. MOV files from editing software can be very large, and some Windows apps, Android phones and websites play them poorly or not at all.

WEBM
WebM video
WebM is an open, royalty-free video format released by Google in 2010 for the web. It is based on Matroska and holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, and VP9 WebM can include an alpha channel for transparent video. Browsers play it natively, and browser screen recorders often produce it. Apple devices, video editors and social platforms have historically had weaker support than for MP4.

MOV goes to WebM when an Apple-made clip leaves the Apple ecosystem for the open web: a page, a CMS or a free-format platform that wants VP9 and Opus instead of HEVC or ProRes.
MOV to WebM: what you gain and what you give up
What the WebM gives you
- Native playback in Chrome, Firefox and Edge without relying on HEVC hardware
- Accepted by free-format platforms that refuse Apple codecs
- A much lighter file than a ProRes or high-bitrate export
- Opus audio that stays clear at modest bitrates
What stays behind in the MOV
- Final Cut Pro, iMovie and many Windows editors do not import WebM
- Safari before version 14.1 cannot play it
- iPhone metadata such as location and capture date
- A second lossy encode; keep the MOV as your master
File size moves in two directions. Against a ProRes export the WebM is dramatically smaller, often a few percent of the original. Against an iPhone HEVC clip it lands in a similar range, because VP9, the most widely used WebM codec, and HEVC are of comparable efficiency; the gain there is compatibility, not space.
For a short silent loop that has to autoplay in places where video is not allowed, such as a README or an e-mail, a MOV to GIF conversion is the fallback. To bring a WebM back into an Apple editing timeline later, WebM to MOV reverses the trip.
MOV to WebM questions
Why does my iPhone MOV play in Safari but not in Firefox?
Since iOS 11 the iPhone camera records HEVC by default under the High Efficiency setting. Safari decodes HEVC on Apple hardware, but Firefox support depends on the platform, and Chrome only plays it where the computer has a hardware HEVC decoder. A WebM copy removes the guesswork.
Can I upload a ProRes MOV from Final Cut Pro?
Yes, if it is under 95 MB, but ProRes is an editing codec with very high bitrates: ProRes 422 at 1080p uses around 145 Mbit/s, so only a few seconds fit. Export an H.264 MOV or a shorter section first, then convert it to WebM here.
Will a Mac screen recording stay sharp as WebM?
Screen recordings are mostly flat text and interface elements, which WebM's open codecs compress efficiently. Keep Resolution at the source so small text stays readable; lower only the frame rate, for example to 30 fps, if the recording was captured at 60.
Does WebM keep the location and date from my iPhone clip?
No. The creation date, GPS location and camera details that iPhone writes into MOV metadata are not carried into the WebM. For publishing on the web that is usually welcome; keep the MOV if you want the original record.
Should I convert MOV to WebM or to MP4 for my website?
Ideally both: list the WebM first and an H.264 MP4 second in the video tag, and each browser picks the one it plays best. If you can only host one file, MP4 is the safer single choice, which the MOV to MP4 converter produces.
