GIF to WebM Converter
A GIF stores every frame as a separate indexed image, which makes loops heavy and grainy. WebM stores the same motion as modern video, so the file shrinks dramatically and colors stop banding.

Max 95 MB per file· Up to 20 files· Deleted after 30 minutes
Files are processed on our servers and deleted after 30 minutes.
Lower is better quality and a bigger file. 18 looks identical to the source, 23 is the default, 28 and above shows visible softening.
Frames per second. Keep the source rate unless a platform asks for a specific one; 15–20 fps is plenty for GIFs.
Only used for PowerPoint files and single still images: how long each slide or picture stays on screen.
Auto uses AAC for MP4/MOV and Opus for WebM. Copy keeps the original sound untouched when the new format supports it.
192 kbps is transparent for music; 128 kbps is enough for speech.
Width of the animation in pixels; height follows the aspect ratio. 480 px suits chats, 720 px or more gives a high-quality GIF but a much larger file.
GIF holds at most 256 colors. Fewer colors make a smaller file but cause banding on gradients and skin tones.
Mixes palette colors in a fine pattern to hide banding. Sierra gives the smoothest result; none gives the smallest file.
Whether the animation repeats endlessly or plays one time and stops.
Optional. Seconds (e.g. 75) or minutes:seconds (1:15). Leave empty to start at the beginning.
Optional. Same format as the start time. Leave empty to keep everything up to the end.
The converted file will be at or just under this size.

Why convert GIF to WebM
WebM was announced by Google in 2010 as an open, royalty-free video format, built on a subset of the Matroska container. Its VP9 codec compresses motion by predicting each frame from the previous ones, something GIF cannot do, and it keeps full color instead of a 256-entry palette. The result is a smaller file with smoother gradients.
That matters wherever size is capped. Free Discord accounts can upload 10 MB per file, Telegram video stickers allow 256 KB, and every extra megabyte on a web page slows the first paint. A loop that is too heavy as a GIF often fits comfortably as WebM.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format
GIF was introduced by CompuServe in 1987 and is still the most widely supported format for short, looping animations. It is lossless but limited to a palette of 256 colours per frame, so photos and gradients show banding and dithering. It supports only on/off (1-bit) transparency, which leaves jagged edges on curved shapes. Animated GIFs are often far larger than the same clip as MP4 or WebP. Every browser, chat app and social platform plays GIFs.

WEBM
WebM video
WebM is an open, royalty-free video format released by Google in 2010 for the web. It is based on Matroska and holds VP8, VP9 or AV1 video with Vorbis or Opus audio, and VP9 WebM can include an alpha channel for transparent video. Browsers play it natively, and browser screen recorders often produce it. Apple devices, video editors and social platforms have historically had weaker support than for MP4.

GIF goes to WebM to make a loop light enough for a chat upload, a Telegram sticker or a web page, swapping the 256-color palette for real video compression.
Using a converted WebM in Discord, Telegram and on a site
Drag the WebM into a channel; it plays inline and repeats when short. Under 10 MB it uploads on a free account.
- Use Limit file size at 10 MB for long loops
Send the file to @Stickers to create a video sticker set. Telegram checks the rules on upload.
- 512 px on the longer side
- 3 seconds or less
- 256 KB or less, no sound
Use a muted, looping video tag instead of an img tag. Browsers only autoplay muted video, and playsinline keeps iPhones from opening full screen.
- Add an MP4 source as a fallback
<video autoplay loop muted playsinline width="480"><source src="loop.webm" type="video/webm"><source src="loop.mp4" type="video/mp4"></video>
When to keep the GIF instead
Email is the main exception: most mail apps show an animated GIF inline, while very few play a video inside the message body. Some forum signatures, wikis and older content systems also accept images only. Keep the GIF there, and use compress GIF for Discord if the only problem was the size.
Everything else that plays video, from slides to landing pages, gets a better loop from WebM or MP4. For other formats and settings, see the video converter.
GIF to WebM questions
How much smaller is WebM than the original GIF?
Typically 80–95% smaller for the same loop at the same size. GIF compresses each frame on its own with a 1987 method, while VP9 video stores only what changes between frames. Loops with a static background shrink the most.
Does the WebM loop like the GIF did?
A video file has no loop flag of its own; the player decides. Discord and Telegram repeat short WebM clips automatically, and on a web page the loop attribute on the video tag does the same. The snippet above includes it.
What are Telegram's rules for video stickers?
Telegram video stickers must be WebM with the VP9 codec, 512 px on the longer side, no longer than 3 seconds, no audio and at most 256 KB. Set Resolution low enough to reach 512 px, trim to 3 seconds and tick Limit file size at 256 KB.
Why does my GIF's transparent background turn black in the WebM?
GIF transparency is a single palette entry, and this conversion writes an opaque video. Transparent pixels get a solid fill. For a transparent sticker on Discord or LINE, GIF to APNG keeps the cut-out.
Will the WebM play on an iPhone?
Recent iOS versions play VP9 WebM in Safari, but older iPhones and some apps do not. For a page, list an MP4 source after the WebM one so every device finds a file it can play; GIF to MP4 makes that second file.
