How to use this tool

  1. 1

    Upload the deck

Add .pptx or older .ppt files, up to 20 at a time and 95 MB or less each. Decks with large embedded videos may need trimming first.

  2. 2

    Set the slide time

Seconds per slide is set to 8, enough to read a title and a few bullets. Lower it for photo slides or raise it, up to 60, for dense charts.

  3. 3

    Convert and play

Press Convert to MP4 and watch the result once before sharing. The deck and the video are deleted from our servers after 30 minutes.

A video plays on any phone, TV and website, while a .pptx needs PowerPoint, Keynote or a compatible viewer. Converting the deck to MP4 trades interactivity for that reach: no clicks, no presenter, just slides on a timer.

Why turn a PowerPoint presentation into an MP4

The .pptx format arrived with Office 2007 as part of Office Open XML, standardized as ECMA-376 in 2006 and ISO/IEC 29500 in 2008. It is a zip of XML and media that only presentation software can lay out. YouTube, Instagram, TVs with a USB port and digital signage players accept none of it, but all of them accept an H.264 MP4.

Common reasons to convert: a welcome loop on a reception screen, a lecture summary posted to a course page, a product overview sent to a client on their phone, or a Google Slides deck downloaded as .pptx, since Google Slides has no video export of its own. If the recipient needs to print or annotate the slides instead, PPTX to PDF is the better format.

PPTX

Microsoft PowerPoint presentation

PPTX is Microsoft PowerPoint's default presentation format since Office 2007, based on the Office Open XML standard. It stores slides, layouts, images, charts, speaker notes, transitions and embedded media in a ZIP package of XML. It is the most widely used format for slide decks in business and education. Google Slides, Keynote and LibreOffice Impress open PPTX, though fonts, animations and layout may change slightly.

MP4

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

PPTX becomes MP4 when slides have to play by themselves on something that cannot run PowerPoint: a TV loop, a video platform, a phone, or a recipient who only needs to watch.

Video length and file size from a slide deck

The running time is simple arithmetic: slides times Seconds per slide. A 20-slide deck at the 8-second preset gives a video of 2 minutes 40 seconds. Since PowerPoint 2013 the default slide size is 16:9, which fills a TV or YouTube player; older 4:3 decks get black bars at the sides.

Still slides compress extremely well in H.264, because nothing changes between frames until the next slide, so a typical deck video is far smaller than a filmed clip of the same length. PowerPoint 2010 could export only WMV and needed QuickTime to play MP4, so to insert a clip into a deck on that version, convert it with MP4 to WMV.

PPTX to MP4 questions

Do slide animations and transitions play in the MP4?

No. Each slide becomes one still frame shown for the time you set, in its final built state, and the video cuts to the next slide. For flying bullets and morph transitions, use PowerPoint's own File > Export > Create a Video on a computer with PowerPoint.

Can I give each slide a different duration?

Not here; Seconds per slide applies to every slide in the deck. PowerPoint's Rehearse Timings records a time per slide, and its Create a Video export can then use those recorded timings.

Will narration or music from the deck be included?

No, the MP4 is built from the slide pictures and has no sound. To put a voice-over or song under the slides, export them as images and combine them with the audio file using audio to video.

Does a .ppt file from PowerPoint 2003 work too?

Yes, the upload accepts both .ppt and .pptx. Very old decks sometimes use fonts or clip art that render slightly differently, so check the video before sending it on.

Why do my fonts look different in the video?

The deck uses a font that is not embedded in the file, so a substitute is used while rendering. In PowerPoint for Windows, tick Embed fonts in the file under File > Options > Save, save, and upload again.

What can I do if the deck is over 95 MB?

Large decks usually carry full-resolution photos or embedded videos. Run Compress Pictures in PowerPoint, remove video clips you can share separately, or split the deck into two files and convert both.
