Answer

How do I convert MOV to MP4 without installing anything?

Upload the MOV here, keep Video codec on H.264 and press Convert to MP4. The video is re-encoded once into an MP4 that plays on Windows, Android and every browser.

Why iPhone MOV files refuse to play elsewhere

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, introduced in 1991. The container itself is rarely the problem; MP4 was standardized on top of the QuickTime file structure, and many players open both. What breaks playback is the codec inside. Starting with iOS 11 in 2017, iPhone 7 and later models record video as HEVC (H.265) when the camera format is set to High Efficiency, and that is the factory setting.

HEVC packs the same picture into roughly half the space of H.264, which is great for phone storage and bad for everyone you send the clip to. Windows 10 and 11 decode it only after you buy the HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store, older smart TVs and car screens have no decoder at all, and browser support depends on the graphics hardware. Re-encoding to H.264 inside an MP4 is the dependable fix.

If you film a lot for other people, you can also switch Settings > Camera > Formats to Most Compatible, which records H.264 directly. For clips you already shot, this converter does the same job after the fact.

MOV vs MP4: same family, different reach

MOV

QuickTime movie

MOV is the QuickTime container format created by Apple in 1991. iPhones record MOV files, and professional editing tools use it for high-quality codecs such as Apple ProRes, including versions with transparency. It can hold multiple video, audio, timecode and subtitle tracks. MOV files from editing software can be very large, and some Windows apps, Android phones and websites play them poorly or not at all.

MP4

MPEG-4 video

MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a multimedia container standardised by ISO/MPEG and based on Apple's QuickTime format. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, and can also carry subtitles, chapters and metadata. It is the most compatible video format in the world, playing on phones, browsers, TVs, game consoles and social platforms. The video inside is almost always lossy, so repeated re-encoding gradually reduces quality.

MP4 converter

People convert MOV to MP4 because a Windows PC, an Android phone or a website cannot decode the HEVC video inside an iPhone clip; MP4 with H.264 is the one combination every player handles.

Settings worth changing before you convert

The defaults suit most clips: H.264 video at Quality (CRF) 23, AAC audio at 192 kbps, and the original resolution and frame rate. Three situations call for a change. If the result has to fit a size cap, such as an email attachment, turn on Limit file size and type the maximum; the converter lowers the bitrate until it fits. Our guide on compressing video for Discord and email covers the common caps.

If the clip is 4K and only needs to look good on a phone or laptop, set Resolution to 1080p. That alone usually cuts the file to a third or a quarter of its size. And if you want to keep HEVC's small size because everyone on the receiving end has a recent device, pick H.265 under Video codec; the output is still an MP4, which helps with upload forms. For other HEVC sources, such as a drone or Android recording, use HEVC to MP4.

Before you upload

  • Each MOV can be up to 95 MB; up to 20 clips per batch.
  • H.264 + AAC is the safe default for sharing.
  • Pick 1080p to shrink 4K phone footage.
  • Files are removed 30 minutes after processing.

MOV to MP4 questions

Why does my iPhone video play on a Mac but not on my Windows laptop?

Since iOS 11, iPhones record in HEVC (H.265) when Settings > Camera > Formats is on High Efficiency, which is the default. Windows needs Microsoft's paid HEVC Video Extensions to decode it. Converting to MP4 with H.264 removes that dependency.

Is there a MOV to MP4 converter online free over 1 GB?

Not here: every upload is capped at 95 MB. For a long recording, trim it on the phone first or switch the camera to a lower resolution before you shoot. Once the clip is under 95 MB, the conversion itself has no daily limit.

Do MOV and MP4 look different after conversion?

At the default Quality (CRF) of 23 the MP4 looks the same as the MOV at normal viewing size. Lower the value to 18 if the clip will be edited again, since that leaves more detail for a second encode.

Can I just rename .mov to .mp4?

Sometimes it plays, because both formats share the same box structure, but the codec inside does not change. An HEVC MOV renamed to .mp4 still fails on a PC without the HEVC decoder, and upload forms that probe the file may reject it.

Does the sound survive the conversion?

Yes. iPhone clips already carry AAC audio, which goes into MP4 unchanged in quality at the 192 kbps default. Turn on Remove audio only if you want a silent clip.

Will the date and location of the clip be kept?

Some apps show the conversion date instead, because file system dates are not part of the video stream. If you sort clips by when they were shot, put the date in the file name first.
