Daylight saving in New South Wales
Australia's colonies adopted standard time zones in 1895, but New South Wales has used summer time continuously only since 1971. Clocks go forward at 2:00 AM on the first Sunday of October and back at 3:00 AM on the first Sunday of April; in 2026 the dates are April 5 and October 4. For the Sydney Olympics in 2000 the state started daylight saving early, in late August.
Not every eastern state agrees. Queensland, just to the north, keeps AEST all year, so Brisbane is an hour behind Sydney from October to April. Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory switch with New South Wales.
Calls with New York and London
Because the seasons are reversed, Sydney's gap with the northern hemisphere moves twice a year on each side. With New York it ranges from 14 hours (June, July) to 16 hours (January), with 15 hours in the transition weeks. A workable slot is 7:00 or 8:00 AM in Sydney, which is the previous afternoon in New York. The AEST to EST table shows each hour for the current date.
London is 9 hours behind during the British summer, 11 hours behind in the British winter and 10 hours in between. The usual overlap is early evening in Sydney, around 6:00 to 8:00 PM, against the London morning. The Australian Securities Exchange trades from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM local time.
