Why Queensland skips daylight saving

Queensland trialed daylight saving for three summers, from 1989 to 1992, and then put the question to a referendum in 1992. Voters rejected it by about 54 percent to 46, with strong opposition in rural and northern areas, where the summer heat and early sunrise made an extra hour of evening sun unappealing. Brisbane and the south-east corner voted in favor, but the statewide result decided it, and later proposals have not changed the law.

The practical quirk is on the border. Coolangatta in Queensland and Tweed Heads in New South Wales are one continuous town, yet for half the year they show different times. New Year's Eve fireworks there can be celebrated twice, an hour apart.

Very early summer mornings

Brisbane lies at about 153° east, east of the 150th meridian on which AEST is based, and without daylight saving its summer sunrise is very early: around 4:50 AM near the December solstice, with sunset near 6:42 PM and about 13 hours 53 minutes of daylight. In June the sun rises around 6:37 AM and sets about 5:01 PM. Solar noon falls close to 11:46 to 11:50 AM all year.

Scheduling with Brisbane

Offices typically work 8:30 or 9:00 to 17:00. Brisbane is fourteen hours ahead of New York during US daylight time and fifteen hours ahead in the US winter, so 8:00 AM in Brisbane is 5:00 or 6:00 PM the previous day in New York. London is nine hours behind in the northern summer and ten in winter. Melbourne and Sydney match Brisbane from April to October and are one hour ahead the rest of the year. Frequently asked questions

Does Brisbane have daylight saving time?
No. Queensland stays on AEST, UTC+10, all year after rejecting daylight saving in a 1992 referendum.
Is Brisbane an hour behind Sydney?
From the first Sunday of October to the first Sunday of April, yes. In the rest of the year both cities are on UTC+10 and show the same time.
Is the Gold Coast on Brisbane time?
Yes. The Gold Coast is in Queensland and uses AEST all year, although neighboring Tweed Heads in New South Wales moves its clocks in summer.
Why does the sun rise before 5 AM in Brisbane in summer?
Brisbane sits east of the AEST reference meridian and Queensland does not move its clocks forward, so December sunrise comes around 4:50 AM.
