Four switch dates, three gaps

The UK moves to BST on the last Sunday of March and back to GMT on the last Sunday of October. Sydney moves to AEDT on the first Sunday of October and back to AEST on the first Sunday of April. Between those four Sundays the gap is 11 hours (late October to late March), 10 hours (late March to early April), 9 hours (early April to early October) and 10 hours again (early October to late October).

Not every Australian city follows Sydney. Brisbane has no daylight saving and is 10 hours ahead of London in the UK winter and 9 in summer. Perth, on UTC+8, is 8 hours ahead of GMT and 7 ahead of BST.

Cricket through the British night

The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground starts at 10:30 AM local time on December 26, which is 11:30 PM on Christmas Day in the UK. During an Ashes series in Australia, British fans listen to the morning session overnight and wake up to the tea score.

Family ties are just as strong. Close to a million people born in the UK live in Australia, many dating back to the postwar assisted-passage scheme, and working-holiday visas keep the flow going. The usual family call is a Sydney evening and a London morning: 7:00 PM in Sydney is 8:00 AM in London in January and 10:00 AM in July.
