Opposite seasons, opposite clock changes
Australia's daylight saving runs in the southern summer. New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania move their clocks forward on the first Sunday of October and back on the first Sunday of April. India never changes, so the difference to Sydney is 4½ hours during the Australian winter and 5½ hours during its summer. Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so Brisbane stays 4½ hours ahead of India all year, and Perth, on UTC+8, stays 2½ hours ahead.
That means one city pair can have three different gaps: in December, Delhi–Perth is 2½ hours, Delhi–Brisbane 4½ and Delhi–Sydney 5½.
Students, cricket and family
India is one of the largest sources of migrants and international students in Australia, and Indian-born residents are the country's second-largest overseas-born group after those born in England. Calls home from Sydney work best in the Australian evening: 8:00 PM AEDT is 2:30 PM in India in summer.
Cricket fans see the time difference every Australian summer. The Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground starts at 10:30 AM local time, which is 5:00 AM in India. Flights between Delhi and Sydney or Melbourne take around 12 to 13 hours nonstop. For India against Singapore's fixed clock, see IST to SGT.
