The end of Bombay Time
India Standard Time was introduced in 1906, but Bombay refused to give up its own local time, which ran about 39 minutes behind IST. Bombay Time was a matter of civic pride and was kept by the city's businesses and public clocks for decades; it was finally abolished only in 1955, years after Calcutta had dropped its own local time.
IST is calculated for the 82.5° east meridian, far east of Mumbai's 72.9° east. Solar noon in the city therefore arrives between about 12:25 and 12:55 PM, and both sunrise and sunset come later by the clock than in Delhi or Kolkata. The half-hour offset itself has stayed fixed since independence, apart from brief wartime clock changes in the 1940s and in 1962, 1965 and 1971.
Markets on Dalal Street
The Bombay Stock Exchange, founded in 1875 and Asia's oldest, and the National Stock Exchange both trade equities from 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST. That session overlaps with the afternoon in Tokyo and Singapore and the morning in London, where the market opens at 8:00 AM, which is 12:30 or 1:30 PM in Mumbai.
New York is nine and a half hours behind during American daylight time and ten and a half in winter. A 7:30 PM call in Mumbai is therefore 10:00 AM or 9:00 AM in New York, the slot most offshore teams use. London is four and a half hours behind in summer and five and a half in winter. The IST to EST table lists every hour of the day.

Sun and monsoon
At 19° north, Mumbai's day length varies by only about two and a half hours. In June the sun rises close to 6:00 AM and sets around 7:15 PM; in December sunrise is near 7:05 AM and sunset about 6:05 PM. The long monsoon cloud from June to September makes the summer evenings feel shorter than the numbers suggest.
