NZST, NZDT and the change dates
Clocks go forward from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM on the last Sunday of September and back from 3:00 AM to 2:00 AM on the first Sunday of April. In 2026 that meant April 5 and September 27; the next change back is April 4, 2027. At UTC+13 Auckland is one of the first major cities to reach midnight, which is why New Year fireworks over the Sky Tower are often the first shown on world broadcasts.
New Zealand was the first country to adopt a single standard time for the whole nation, in 1868, at 11 hours 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich. The modern UTC+12 offset dates from 1946. The Chatham Islands, east of the mainland, run 45 minutes ahead of Auckland all year, one of the few quarter-hour offsets in use.

Long summer evenings, short winter days
At about 37° south, Auckland has roughly 9 hours 40 minutes of daylight at the June solstice, with sunrise near 7:30 AM and sunset around 5:10 PM. In December daylight time pushes sunset to about 8:40 PM and the day lasts close to 14 hours 40 minutes. The sunrise table above recalculates from the city's coordinates for today's date.
Scheduling with the US, Europe and Australia
Because the two hemispheres change clocks in opposite directions, the gap to New York takes three values: 16 hours from April to September, 17 hours in the weeks when both places are on daylight time, and 18 hours from November to mid-March. A 9:00 AM Tuesday meeting in Auckland is Monday afternoon or evening in New York. London is 11 to 13 hours behind, and Sydney is two hours behind for most of the year. The NZST to EST page lists every hour side by side, and the world clock compares Auckland with 68 other cities.

Frequently asked questions
- When does New Zealand start daylight saving?
- On the last Sunday of September at 2:00 AM, when clocks jump to 3:00 AM. Daylight time then lasts until the first Sunday of April.
- How far ahead of New York is Auckland?
- Between 16 and 18 hours depending on the season. Auckland is effectively on the next calendar day, so New York's Monday afternoon is Tuesday morning in Auckland.
- Do Auckland and Wellington share a time zone?
- Yes. The North and South Islands use one clock, and every mainland city changes on the same nights. Only the Chatham Islands keep a different time, 45 minutes ahead.
- What is the time difference between Auckland and Sydney?
- Usually two hours, with Auckland ahead. For a week or two around the start and end of daylight saving it can be one or three hours, because the two countries switch on different Sundays.
- Is NZDT the same as UTC+13?
- Yes. New Zealand Daylight Time is 13 hours ahead of UTC; New Zealand Standard Time, used in winter, is 12 hours ahead.
