The day the Philippines skipped
For more than three centuries the Philippines was governed from Mexico and kept the calendar of the Americas, on the eastern side of what would become the date line. To bring the islands in line with their Asian trading partners, the Spanish authorities skipped Tuesday, December 31, 1844: Monday, December 30 was followed directly by Wednesday, January 1, 1845.
Daylight saving has been tried only briefly, most recently for a few months in 1990. Official time is kept by PAGASA, the national weather agency, and since 2013 a law has asked broadcasters and public offices to synchronize clocks with its standard, under a campaign known as Juan Time.
Working on Manila time and US time
Regular offices work 8:00 or 9:00 to 17:00 or 18:00. The Philippine Stock Exchange trades from 9:30 to about 15:00 with a lunch break. Manila is also one of the world's largest centers for call centers and business process outsourcing, and hundreds of thousands of people work night shifts that match the US business day: a 9:00 AM start in New York is 9:00 or 10:00 PM in Manila.
Manila is twelve hours ahead of New York while the US is on daylight time and thirteen hours ahead from November to March. London is seven hours behind during British Summer Time and eight in winter. The PHT to EST page lists each hour of the day.
Sunrise and sunset
Manila lies at 14.6° north and about 121° east, close to the 120th meridian that UTC+8 is based on, so solar noon is near 11:54 to 11:58 AM. In June the sun rises around 5:28 AM and sets near 6:27 PM, about 13 hours of daylight. In December it rises around 6:16 AM and sets about 5:32 PM, a day of roughly 11 hours 16 minutes.
