AEST to EST
Sydney is 16 hours ahead of New York in the northern winter, 14 hours ahead in the northern summer, and 15 hours ahead for a few weeks in spring and autumn when only one city is on daylight time. 9:00 AM Monday in Sydney is 5:00 PM Sunday in New York in January and 7:00 PM Sunday in July.

Three different gaps in one year
New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania move to daylight time (AEDT, UTC+11) on the first Sunday of October and back to AEST (UTC+10) on the first Sunday of April. New York switches on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November. The result is four seasons of offset: 16 hours from early November to mid-March, 15 hours from mid-March to early April, 14 hours from early April to early October, and 15 hours again from early October to early November.
Brisbane complicates things. Queensland does not use daylight saving, so Brisbane stays on UTC+10 and is 15 hours ahead of New York in the northern winter and 14 in summer. When Australians say "AEST" in December they may mean Brisbane's clock or, loosely, Sydney's, which is actually on AEDT.
The ASX opens as Wall Street closes for the evening
The Australian Securities Exchange trades from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Sydney time. In January that is 6:00 PM to midnight in New York the evening before; in July it is 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM. Wall Street's 4:00 PM close is 8:00 AM the next morning in Sydney in January and 6:00 AM in July, so Australian investors wake up to the US result.
Sport runs on the same clock. Night sessions at the Australian Open in Melbourne start at 7:00 PM local time in January, which is 3:00 AM in New York. For a New York–organized call, open the New York to Sydney page.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does the Sydney–New York difference change so often?
- Both cities use daylight saving, but in opposite halves of the year and on different Sundays. That creates gaps of 16, 15 and 14 hours at different points in the calendar.
- What time does the ASX open in New York?
- The 10:00 AM Sydney open is 6:00 PM the previous evening in New York in January and 8:00 PM in July.
- Is Brisbane on the same time as Sydney?
- Only from April to October. Queensland has no daylight saving, so from the first Sunday of October to the first Sunday of April Brisbane is one hour behind Sydney.
- What time are Australian Open night matches on the US East Coast?
- The 7:00 PM Melbourne night session in January starts at 3:00 AM Eastern the same day.
